Nest Cam 1.69 Update ruined night vision even more

SuperAdam
Community Member

So Google updated their nest cams AGAIN and further ruined Night vision, day time HDR got a bit better but nowhere near as good as it was with 1.65 software, I about had it with Google, look at these picture and tell me if I'm imagining things, the picture on top is the new 1.69 software and the one on the bottom is the 1.67 software just a few minutes before the update, look how fuzzy and grainy everything is with the update, it's like everything is out of focus, STOP MESSING WITH THE CAMERAS GOOGLE, we paid money for this, it's literally unusable at night now.

Hey everyone,

We recently began to roll out a software update for Nest Cam (battery), Nest Doorbell (battery), and Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) that addresses an issue where some users experienced decreased video quality when operating in low light environments. This update will be rolling out to all users over the coming weeks.

Best,
Edmond

Can you include a lens cleaning with that rollout?  Thanks.

Will you be crediting users the subscription moneys for the last few months because of this issue?

What about Floodlight cam?

If I had to guess, I would say it's included because the Nest Floodlight Cam is basically a Nest Battery Cam without the floodlight.

When is nest floodlight camera wired planned in this?

What's the exact version number for this patch?

This update didn't fix the problem, I just got mine and it's still blurry, it's not as bad as before but still **bleep** blurry, what kind of software engineers do you guys have? I about had it with you guys, I swear we should all sue you guys for this.

Will a fix be made for the Wired Nest Cam (2nd gen) since they have the exact same blurry image issue as the other cameras?  The 388143 update didn't fix the issue on my two Wired Nest Cams, there was no improvement whatsoever after they received the update.  Both cameras had a very clear image at night with the firmware out of the box, but after the 1.69 update, they became very blurry and this latest update has no improvement.

Update hasn’t fixed the issue.  AF606251-9F10-41D3-8EE7-11D3683F168B.png52F65B55-5E33-4C3C-926F-D6834ED3D384.png

The older firmware looks significantly better here. At least there's detail.

I am still experiencing terrible video quality! Much lower than the quaity I used to have. Can you address when this will be fixed?

For those requesting photos/screenshots…

What about Google Nest Cam with Floodlight? Quality at night has been blurry and useless since I installed this 2 months ago. Same issue as the other cams at night.

Also it's not technically an issue for low light environments. It seems to happen based on the time. At dawn and sunset the quality is still good, even if it is dark. But that only lasts for a few minutes. It seems the quality gets horrendous once Google thinks it's dark based on the time.

Eg. Say sunset is at 7pm and it gets dark around 7:20pm. The quality will still be good for a few minutes but then suddenly at 7:24pm this blurry mode will kick in.

Updates confirmed on all cameras.  Very little change and still nearly useless image quality.  Completely disappointed in the cameras currently.  We’ve had nest for many years, and we were very happy in the past.   Given current image quality and lack of support, we’re going to finally look to move on.

@EdmondB Many of us have received the firmware update (388143) you mentioned above, but most, if not all, are still having problems with blurry nighttime video. Can you please provide us with an update on why your firmware, which was supposed to fix this problem, hasn't?

The only thing that changed here was the firmware revision number 🤣

Still the same awful low light.

Seriously looking into other door bells right now but may have to throw out all my Google stuff since Google doesn't allow 3rd party manufacturers to use their doorbells for automations or displays inside the Google home eco system.

If you have an Apple computer and use HomeKit, purchasing a Starling Home Hub will allow you to do what want. More here: https://www.starlinghome.io/

So you can see what I'm talking about, here are (4) Nest Battery Cams.

As you've likely read throughout this forum, most of us purchased our Nest Battery Cams for security purposes. Until Google resolves this issue, all of our cameras are effectively worthless at night, which is when most crime happens.

The fact that this problem began in early June and is still unresolved is ridiculous. What's worse is that  BEFORE the June firmware upgrade, everyone was happy with their cameras. If your engineering team needs help figuring out what's going on, I'm sure any of the members on this forum would be more than happy to help. Your company owes it to your loyal customers, many of whom have invested hundreds if not thousands of dollars in your smart home products, to fix this problem ASAP!

This is what one of my 8 cameras looks like tonight.  It’s so blurry it won’t pick up movement unless it’s right in front of the lens which would be a bug or rain.  8B19A130-DC92-4703-9D99-23EA55DF5A5F.jpeg

All my cameras have always been set to night vision (auto default).  On 12/11/23 I noticed that my cameras live views were in black and white and not in color like they used to be. Has anyone else’s noticed this? This is just one example from one of my 8 cameras.  I looked at all 8 of them and noticed the same thing.  When I turned night vision off the black and white live view disappeared 6ABB5D25-82BA-4897-9411-B1506B7690DA.pngECA3CBB8-E1BF-4CB6-A452-187E693B7049.png

If you have enough artificial or natural light during the evening hours, the camera will not switch to that black and white night vision mode.

I’ve had these cameras for two years, this has never happened before and I didn’t change any settings. My front doorbell camera has never had a black and white view because I have porch lights and full sun, that’s what made me notice the change in viewing. I was able to look back at the same time of day and compare the new issue to what it used to look like before 12/11/23. The time and date are in the photos examples.

The problem (blurry night vision) is likely much larger than the community reporting it.  I canceled my subscription as did my neighbor as the seemingly untested update was a huge degradation on what had been good night vision.  Now we get "we'll be rolling out an update", instead of we'll regress to the prior version and do more thorough testing before rolling out an update.  Nobody from Nest contacted me when I had submitted numerous images and feedback about the issue.   On another note, the live view on PC element took up quite a bit of real estate and should have been a more thorough design.   Amazing the lack of quality that had been.   C'mon Google, step your game!

Same issue with floodlight cam.  Nighttime video is useless.  Can't see a thing.  Just last night, no issues.

I am hoping there is new firmware still coming soon as this did not fix the issue at all.  I'm reviving this post as it has gotten quiet lately.  Google needs to address this and not act like it's been fixed because it has not.
