Nest Camera (battery)

Wickedhick
Community Member

I put an outdoor battery camera above my garage. The video does not activate (on any sensitivity) when I pull into or out of my garage. The video only starts recording when a vehicle parks in the driveway and someone gets out.

The doorbell camera (wired) right around the corner will immediately activate, but the battery camera won’t.

Hopefully there is a remedy or explanation for this. It defeats the purpose if someone can literally drive in and out of my garage without being detected.

@Wickedhick

We've had a Google Nest Camera (Battery) for 15 months now, plugged in with the optional power cable. When plugged in, it performs like our older wired cameras in recognizing events. But if we unplug it, it does not recognize anything if we walk in front of it. I think the fact that the camera is in "Idle" mode when running on battery power is a real handicap.

Yeah… I understand the need to have the camera idle when on battery power only. However, to piggyback off of your point, not detecting things moving in front of the camera defeats the entire purpose of having a camera. The fact that someone could pull up and park in my driveway for two hours, and the camera will not record it unless they get out of the car, is really stupid. I would like to be notified as soon as they pull into my driveway.

If you are always looking for ways to improve, a good way to do that would be to respond with any type of answer at all to the question. This forum is riddled with questions that have almost no response whatsoever. Then, a few days later, someone will pop up and ask if anyone still has this problem without actually responding to the problem. It’s madness.

Hi everyone,

@Wickedhick It's us again. I'm bumping up this thread to make sure that everything is covered. We wanted to help you here and wanted to know more about your issue. A few questions: is the Airplane or Do Not Disturb mode turned off or on? How far is the car from your Nest Camera? Did you try to use a different mobile device?

Give these steps a try:

  • Try turning off and on the notification settings of your Nest Camera.
  • Make sure that your Nest app or Google Home app is enabled from your mobile phone's app permission.
  • Consider setting up your activity zone.

Let us know how it goes.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer and Brad.

Thanks,
Emerson

I have no problem getting notifications on my phone from the app for my doorbell or certain things with my camera. It is just this specific range that is not picked up for some reason.

and since you mentioned setting up different zones, that is another issue that I am having. The camera will not allow me to set up any zones. I signed up for nest aware, and tried to complete the set up, but the app says there are no compatible devices. Even though it recognizes my devices and they are the most updated models available.

@Wickedhick

What happens when you select the camera and go to Settings | Events and select "Seen events" to set up activity zones? Don't you have an "Add a zone" option?

With regard  to your Nest Aware subscription, is subscription on the same Google Nest "home/structure" where your camera is, and on the same Google Account? If you go to the Subscription Management page (https://store.google.com/subscriptions?hl=en-US) and select your subscription, it will show the "home".

In the Google Home app, you can also go to Settings | Nest Aware to see what subscription is listed. And  if you go to your cameras you can select Settings | Video, and under "Video History" it should show the subscription for your camera.

I’m able to add zones now, so that seems to be ok. The incompatible device issue persists, even though the devices are brand new and fully updated.
