Nest Camera ending recordings early

Misha0926

Hello,

I have nest outdoor cameras that are both wired and on battery and all seem to have the same issue. They detect a person and start recording, but the recording will end early while the person is still walking around in the video. I have the video length set to 3 min max, but it ends way before then. Any idea what setting I should change or if it is something different? Thanks!

Hi Jagilu71,  I'm an end user like you.   Setting the MAXIMUM of 3 minutes is just that.  It is a MAXIMUM.  It is not a minimum record time.    It appears that in the current design once the camera sees the motion STOPs it turns off I'm guessing to save battery.   What we really need is a minimum record time.

Hi Misha, I'm an end user like you.  For that very reason I choose to spend the extra money to get the FULL NEST AWARE PLUS.  That way it is constantly recording 24/7.   That feature has other benefits as well and I really like it.  NOTE: it does not work with the new Nest Doorbell (Battery).  It does however work on the older Nest HELLO doorbell which is a better product in my opinion compared to the new doorbell.

We are experiencing the same issue. I don’t believe throwing more money at Google for full Nest Aware is the solution.  His seems to be something in need of a fix.

I agree. Getting the more expensive 24/7 recording doesn't make sense to me and for the one that is on battery (and my doorbell) it would drain the battery infinitely fast. I don't need it to record all of the time, but it doesn't even record the full 3 minutes when there is activity. And it isn't a concern about battery saving as the battery currently has 5 months left before it needs another charge. I just need it to record all of the activity it sees, not just the first minute or so.

We have a Google Nest Camera (Battery) plugged in with the optional power cable, with the maximum event length set to 3 minutes, along with a Nest Aware Plus subscription, and have noticed occasional events as long 5 minutes in our event history.  But since we have 24/7 history, I haven't particularly noticed whether an event is cut off (that is, no longer flagged as part of the event in the history), since we can view the entire event anyhow.  We haven't had a need yet to download an event clip, but if we did we'd encounter the inability to create manual clips with these new cameras.

That seems like an issue too as you can't create clips. What happens when you need to turn something in to your insurance or the police? That sounds like you wouldn't be able to do it since you can't create a clip from the 24/7 recording.

Hi Misha,  Couple things:

The 24/7 doesn't work if the cameras are running on battery. And it doesn't work on the Doorbell even if it is running on power (the reason I returned the new Doorbell and went back to the HELLO doorbell)

Regarding making tips: If you are on the old gen 1 cameras that use the NEST app you can easily create clips from the web interface of any recorded material.  And not only that but it has this great feature where you can send anyone a link to play the clip so you don't have to actually send a file.  I use it fairly often and I love it.  The design is perfect.  And if they don't bring this feature to the new gen 2 cameras I will be jumping ship for sure.

Thanks. So sounds like 24/7 still is not the solution for me since my cameras are Gen 2 and one is on battery.

Your Gen 2 cams that are NOT on battery would still get the benefit.  Since the subscription is month-to-month you can upgrade it to the AWARE PLUS for only about $6.00 and if you don't like it then knock it back down to the lower subscription.

Hey there,

Thank you @EmptyNester for that information as that is correct. It is a maximum number, it is not the minimum in this case.

Best regards,

Brad

Hello Brad,

Yes, I believe there are multiple users who need assistance with this issue.  If we set our camera to record the maximum (3 minutes) then why would the camera not record those three minutes?
