Nest hub screen turns black when streaming camera

avarshine89

We have an indoor nest camera installed in the nursery room and Nest hub on my nightstand which streams that camera and it was fine till recently. But now I wake up to black screen. But when I stream it on my phone, camera is working fine. Don't understand this issue and how to fix it. WiFi is working fine, camera is working fine. Is it the hub? What is the resolution? Both camera and the hub are pretty new.

Several people have reported the same issue.
see https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Cameras-and-Doorbells/Blackscreen-during-live-feeds-on-the-hu...

A workaround is to view the stream from the Home App. It may restart the stream in the hub (though it may not persist).

Hello folks,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

@Mistered, I appreciate you chiming in to this thread.

@avarshine89, sorry to hear about this. I agree with what was mentioned in the previous post. However, if it doesn't work with restarting the Nest Hub, could you please provide us a short video clip showing the exact display you're getting every time you try to steam your camera? We'd like to check on this further to see what steps we could try.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Princess

@Princesss  Experiencing the same issues with the same equipment, if you’re unable to receive an example from OP, I can send you one.

I’m having the same issues. Was working fine for months. Now it’s borderline useless. This is obviously due to a bad software update from Google. If it’s working on the phone then the camera and steaming is working fine. Would love a factory reset option or a manual software update option so I can turn it off.

if it ain’t broke,  don’t fix it.

Same issue

Nest hub Max viewing a Google Nest Indoor Camera

Yet an iPad mini running the Google home app can view the feed for 24 hours with no issues

Having the same issue. Screen goes black after a few minutes. Trying to use as a communication link between house and barn. It worked for a few months but not anymore. Starting to look for alternative devices.

Anything that runs the Home app will work. I use iPads, a Lenovo Tab M8 and my Galaxy phone.

How disappointing you need to use non Google hardware to get a reliable view of the feeds

I'm having the same issue.  Camera shows up fine on one hub but not the other and always works on my phone.  Just shows a black screen and plays audio.  All products are less than a year old and used to work without this problem.

Im having the same issues. Had it for about 1 year now. I have done ALOT of testing and tried different approaches to find a cause. I have a setup with 5 generation 1 hubs and 4 cameras. This issue is present on all hubs with all cameras (indoor and outdoor).

First I upgraded my wifi to Orbi Wifi 6 Mesh and now have great signal and speed. So its not the network.

I have tried reseting all devices, deleted them, re-installed and so on. Without any luck.

What I have figured out, which is quite interesting, is that when the issue happens (the camera live feed goes black while watching on any hub), you can re-establish the live feed on the hub by going into the specific camera live view on the home app on any other device, like your phone.

However, this does not fix it permanently. But if you do this 3-4-5 times (enter, exit, enter and exit) on the specific camera via home app on your phone, the feed seems to become stable on the hub for some reason.

Sometimes rebooting the hub also helps, but not always.

These products are pretty much useless until these issues are fixed. So I hope there is a solution coming soon.

I'm going to imagine the fix will be purchasing new gen hardware that uses bard .. not hopeful of great support

I guess so. But before doing that...are we sure there are not the same issues here?

Probably not.  Googles attention to detail is lacking. Too big a portfolio of things, not enough focus

I bought my parents a nest hub for Christmas and every time we try calling them or them us, their screen is black and we also can't see them. Unplugging/plugging back in fixes it, but it's incredibly frustrating that they have to do this, especially with a brand new device.

Nest hub max will reliably stream my nest hello doorbell cam wired. but my nest cam wired and nest doorbell wired? forget it.

Restart Wi-Fi and it works for a short while. Don't suppose it has something to do with the new versus old interface?

Google device doesn't work with google device? Priceless, literally priceless. But priceless(free) isn't what I paid.

Yes, it works reliably on my apple iPhone. But I bought the hub max for that purpose.

so if I use my APPLE IPHONE and turn cameras off and back on...

I can then view the cameras with nest hub max for a short, very short, time.

I get the feeling google isn't even trying to figure out what change they made that screwed this up.
