Next Cam Outdoors batteries died

Dmajor

I've had my 2 Nest Cams less than a year. Went through one Chicago winter. Sits at the top of the garage looking north and south. Just after winter, both camera's indicated the batteries were very low and at 7% they both went off. I tried to charge them multiple times unsuccessfully. I paid $200 to have my electrical outlets inspected. The company (Audio / video) installers came out to troubleshoot and said the internal batteries were dead. Since 2 identical new cameras batteries died at the same time, they recommended calling Google to get the devices replaced. They said it is possible that the internal batteries could not withstand the cold winter. This is not good, especially coming from a company like Google. A lot of my neighbors have Arlo, and I am the only idiot to pay a hefty price for my FANCY Google cam's to only look like a fool less than a year later. Thanks Google. All the cheap Arlo Cams are still going strong in the same climate and mounted on my neighbors garage just the same. Don't even think to say, well it may be where the camera is mounted. Nope. The parts are horrible if they cannot survive one winter, let alone two!

Sometime in late winter or early spring, in response to a wave of customer complaints (for example: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Cameras-and-Doorbells/Cold-weather-concerns-with-Nest-Doorbel...), Google Nest finally admitted that the batteries in its battery camera and battery doorbell cannot charge at temperatures below freezing, and posted this: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/11830989?hl=en.

However, we've had a Google Nest Camera (Battery) for a year, plugged in all the time with the optional weatherproof power cable. Because it is plugged in, it's not running on battery power and the battery never went below 77% even in a Minnesota winter with temperatures reaching -20 Fahrenheit.

If your cameras are less than a year old, they should be covered by warranty. You could try contacting Google Nest Support for replacements, starting with this link: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp. But if you replace them, I would strongly suggest using the optional power cable. And make sure you get the secure loop they're now providing for the cameras. (Note also that we have ours mounted under a camera shade.)
