Outdoor camera not detecting motion.

Flsr
Community Member

I have two outdoor cameras. Both of them do mot detect motion until a person is virtually in front of the camera and 6 ft away. The camera then only records a short clip of the person and does not show all activity until the person exits the zone.

I am operating on battery and have no option for power. Unless the sensitivity can be improved, these cameras are worthless to me.

I still have the problem.  I have called Nest Support 2X and executed a number of tests/suggested solutions and nothing has helped.  The actions included, resetting the cameras, eliminating zones, reinstalling the cameras, changing from 5 Ghz to 2.5 Ghz internet network and testing internet speeds.   The attached image depicts the problem.  The person in the screenshot has walked 25-30 feet on a sidewalk towards the camera.  Yet the camera does not detect motion until the person is almost under the camera.  Identification of the person is difficult as the face is now obscured.

Hi again,

May I ask what your sensitivity is set too for alerts/motion detection? I would suggest looking into those settings and making sure its all good and set correctly.

Best Regards,

Brad.

The sensitivity is set to the most sensitive setting.  The motion detection has improved a slight amount, however it is still not detecting any movement coming towards the camera until it is 10-15 ft away.

Hey again,

Have any of you tried setting up Activity Zones with your cameras? I would suggest looking into these as you can hone in on a certain area you would like notifications for, and it could help you get the motion detection you want in that area. This would be a fix for your situation. If a Restart or even a Factory Reset didn't do the trick, and you have gone through your settings and it is all set up correctly, I would suggest this.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Best Regards,

Brad.

Yes, I've setup Activity Zones. I did this after hardly ever getting events recorded and wondering how to. The zones helped, at least for areas I could help the system ignore, but I still am not getting events recording fast enough or at the right times. My next step will be to subscribe to the higher monthly plan and record 24hrs and manually scan the videos. If there are enough missed events or battery life reduces even further, I may return the cameras for the wyze ones...

I have 1 activity zone for each camera that is honed on a certain area.  It has not helped.  The issue is that the cameras do not sense motion coming directly at it until the person is very close to the camera.  Given that this issue has been posted many times by others, it is apparent that this product does not meet expectations.  I wish Google/Nest would acknowledge the problem and stand behind their product with software or hardware remedies.  I would urge anyone considering the purchase of a camera to not buy this camera as it does not meet the function of a security camera.

Where do I go next for a remedy?

I am trying the 24hr recording subscription to compare what I see vs events, just to verify there were legit visible events. Also, I just found a setting I didn't see before. In the camera "video" settings there is a "Wake up sensitivity" setting defaulting to medium

I'm getting similar results. Today, I had a person walk through my camera view without detection, I only got detection from my other outdoor Wyze camera. I would've hoped the expensive google camera would've gotten a far better result. Other times in the past, I, too, only get events triggered when a person is within 5-10ft. A ups truck will drive up to my house, the driver will get out and walk to my door, and only at the point they are dropping the package off do I start having recorded video. I would've expected to get video starting from the truck driving in.
