Thoughts for improvement on the "Google Nest Camera 2.0" and "Google Home" experience

  • Video availability via home.google.com is ESSENTIAL.
  • Custom clip creation from the history is ESSENTIAL.
  • IF there's a max clip length that the device can process, the device should by default not create (or segment) any activity that exceeds that length.
  • takeout.google.com should export video history on demand.

The app is severely limited in functionality.  I was a nest subscriber a few years ago, and I remember a lot of great features (including setting activity zones, creating custom clips from history, and all of this was possible from the website).  Fast forward a couple years, my nest cameras stop working, and I purchase the "Google Nest" variant.  I find that  I can't:

  • create custom clips from the history,
  • download an automatically created clip of 4minutes and 45seconds,
  • or access my history from the google website.

Knope really hits the nail on the head.

And on the topic of clips, we BADLY need the ability to send someone a LINK to view a clip like in the NEST app.  This feature has never existed in the Google Home app.

Sadly these requests are not on the radar.  We have all been very very vocal about the crippled Google home app while the nest app is forgotten.  The good news is google reads our requests.. guess what just rolled out in the new update.  Your home hub will wish you happy birthday.  Yup that’s what they gave us.  Who the heck requested that?????

Unbelievable and a very sad situation.   I have 7+ months to wait for my "happy birthday" message.

... it just taunts me.. the irony of "Google Nest camera" with "Nest + subscription" not compatible with the superior "home.nest.com" ...  all of this would be solved, if the google nest camera just showed up in the nest app...

Thanks Brad,

I've performed this step.  I also have an open ticket that's escalated to engineering for the failure to download the auto created 4m45s clip.

Hey folks,

I am mainly a moderator over these forums. I can say that they are reviewed as that is my understanding. Feedback provided in the app goes directly to some tech support and engineering teams. Feedback is welcome for sure.

Best regards,

Brad.

Hi Brad, wouldn't it be smarter to just have all the DEVs read this forum and leave the in-app feedback for bugs and problems?   ...... just say'n.

I suppose so, but I do not call the shots, nor do I have control over that process. But all the feedback is reviewed as far as I am aware.

Best regards,

Brad.

Brad, are you sure they read the feedback.  I have been a contributor on here for a while, I read all the requests.  And I read the twitter posts.  Not once have I ever ever seen oooo please we need the hub to do birthday count downs.  Please Big Brother Google give us birthday wishes.  People are asking for nest back and we get birthday kisses?  Honestly they don’t read the feedback.. circular file

Another thing that is unclear if you want to give feedback in the app is that there is no option for "Make a suggestion" or "Request new feature".  Everything in there is for reporting specific problems.  So if feels like it is going to get ignored.

Feature Requests are definitely something that we submit on our end. If any of you have a feature request, I can collect it and send it in.

Brad.

Thanks Brad,  I'm sure people in this forum have submitted these multiple times. But here is my list.

In one broad stroke I think I speak for just about everyone in requesting that the majority of NEST functionality be brought over to the GOOGLE HOME App. This includes (not in any particular order):

Ability to make a clip from any position in the 24/7 timeline, not just be stuck with clips that were recorded by motion trigger.  And for the recorded clips have the ability to adjust the start/end so that a 30 second clip can just be sent to someone with only about 5 seconds worth.

Ability to send a link to someone to view a clip (like the Nest app).  The current Google Home way of saving the clip to the iPhone photos and then sending it for viewing that way is WAY too clumsy and involves way too many steps.  Imagine sending 5 clips this way.

Ability to view recorded clips and/or 24/7 timeline for Gen 1 cameras in the Google Home app.  Jumping between the 2 apps is completely unusable.

Ability to view new cameras and record clips from a PC/MAC browser.

Please release a new doorbell camera that brings back the 24/7 record feature.

Different alerts sounds for EACH camera

Allow Alerts from cameras on Google Hubs.  Each hub should be able to choose if it gets alerts from individual cameras or not.

give the ability to let family/friends view individual cameras I give them permission to view.  And to give them the ability to make changes or not. (IE kind of a view only mode).

There are more in my list but that is it for now.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your responses.

I've received a response to my ticket with engineering stating the next release of the home app in the play store will correct the download issues being reported in various threads.

I've mentioned this thread in the case's email chain in the hopes the other suggestions  make it into future releases as well.

I am glad to hear that you heard from Engineering on the matter! That is more information than I know. Very good to hear. I appreciate you coming back to this thread to let us all know!

Brad.

Hi there,

Just checking in to see if you still need assistance with this issue.  We'll leave this topic open for another 24 hrs in case there are any follow up questions or comments. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Best regards,

Brad

Nope, user feedback comes after marketing strategies.  Remember it’s easier to Market “Google home hub even remembers your birthday”.  Happy Birthday from your home hub and chromecast.
