Very Slow Doorbell View Rendering

JustinDSheridan
Community Member

I have a nest doorbell connected to a 400MB internet connection but any time someone rings my doorbell it takes 45 seconds to two minutes to render the app’s camera view so I can interact. It’s been this way since the day I got it. Does anyone else have this issue? I’d expect the app to be much faster than this.

I had high hopes when buying this doorbell (wired), but the moment i started using the doorbell i knew this one was my worst buy ever. It goes from bad to worse.

When someone rings it takes way to long before notifications come through, talking about 30sec or more. Then if i want to see who is on the door it takes a decade to render (set on low bandwith) the image on Oneplus CE 5G, Android 13 phone.

The rendering even got worse, when i started using the doorbell, the image was rendered in about 30sec, now it goes up to more than a minute. This is ridiculous. When doing the same on a less powerfull tablet the image rendering goes bit faster, let's say about 15sec (but still to slow for todays standards).

I don't expect they will ever come with a decent solution. I've got a friend and he showed me how fast his doorbell works, amazing, 1-2sec and the app was ready for use. Conclusion the google doorbell goes to the bin ( i even don't wanna sell it as second hand).

It should work straight out of the box, The solutions they "provide" are half measures, things most of us will have already tried before contacting the helpdesk.

Never will buy google products again, lesson learned.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for posting in our Community. I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with this. Let’s check it out.

Let's try to check first if the Google Home or Nest apps have any available updates. Follow the steps below:

  1. Check for any iOS or Android updates.
  2. Uninstall the Google Home or Nest app, restart your phone, and then reinstall the app.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Lance

Hi Lance

Done all this. Still delays. Makes doorbell useless really!

Needs replacing tbh.

Thanks

Thanks for picking this up Lance.

I've checked for updates on my android phone (pixel 7pro) and my best hubs. None have any updates.

I've also reinstalled the home app. When pressing the doorbell or appearing within a notification zone, it still takes several seconds to register and alert. Then several more maybe 20 seconds for the nest hub to show who has rung the doorbell.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for getting back to me and for sharing what you’ve done to have your concern resolved. I apologize that the Nest device isn’t working properly.

Let’s try the troubleshooting steps below.

  1. Connect the Nest device to a different Wi-Fi network or mobile hotspot.
  2. Trigger a notification to test.
  3. Take note of how long the delay is, if any.

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Lance

Cheers Lance,
I've connected the nest hub and my nest doorbell (battery) to my mobile hotspot, all within about 1 meter of eachother and theres still a delay in notifications and also a very long delay in the hub rendering the video from the doorbell when pressed.

Hi Lance, I've not had anyone reach out yet, what kind of turn around are you seeing on these at the moment?

JWizzz

Zero turnaround.  They are doing nothing.  As Google is known to do, they'll likely announce they're killing off the Nest service.  They really don't care.  I've already started the migration off back to....  sigh....  Alexa.  But at least it works.

How many homes have more than one internet service?

I'm having the same issue with the nest doorbell connecting to the nest hub. Its too slow to be helpful.

This is not a problem that is a major concern for Google. People keep posting, and community specialist say they will reach out to individuals to do the same troubleshooting step that are always recommended. The nest brand has went down majorly. Ring, Eufy, and other manufacturers might be a better alternative as they focus on these smart home products.

Agreed.  Filled out the form, no reply or response.  Google ruined Nest for sure.  And Google Home and the speakers are getting slower/worse.  Might be time for an ecosystem change at my house.

Same, filled out form, no reply. Weeks and weeks later

Same here. Massive lag between someone ringing the bell and me getting a notification. Also, it doesnt ring my wired internal bell. Just doesnt work very well at all.

I have a 1gb connection also with wifi6 and sometimes my video doesn't even load, just the sound. Really annoying when trying to see who is at my door from my office. Thinking may just get CCTV for video as a backup.

Hi Lance. Yes ive tried all of that with no improvement.

I have a wired version of the doorbell behind a 1000mbit (up and down) fiber connection that also takes ages to render video. I often just give up and close the app.

Also the time between pressing the button and devices showing a notification is at least 4 seconds (after which time the package delivery dude has usually turned around and left).

In the office we have UniFi doorbel which, when pressed, instantly rings on all connected devices and shows an instant livestream when tapping on the notification. I'm considering changing all my Nest gear out for UniFi for this reason.

Hi Sardonix,

Thanks for joining the conversation. I appreciate your reports here in the Community. Let’s check it out.

A few questions: what model of the wired Nest doorbell do you have? Are you using an iOS or Android mobile device? Was the doorbell set up in the Google Home or Nest app? Also, what troubleshooting steps have you tried, if any?

Follow the steps below:

  1. Check for any iOS or Android updates.
  2. Uninstall the Google Home or Nest app, restart your phone, and then reinstall the app.
  3. Connect the Nest device to a different Wi-Fi network or mobile hotspot (if available).
  4. Trigger a notification to test.
  5. Take note of how long the delay is, if any.

Here’s a guide with troubleshooting steps if the Nest device’s video doesn't play, pauses, or skips.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Lance

Lance. None of these actions do anything to speed up the delay between a user pressing the doorbell button and getting an alert on a device. Its so slow now that by the time I answer the door the caller has started to walk away. Google need to issue a firmware or software update or both.

Especially as the issue occurs on every connected device that is supposed to receive a notification. Even our Google Nest Hub takes its time telling us there's someone at the door. It has nothing to do with iOS/Android updates whatsoever.

Where'd you go Lance?  You gave us a bunch of basic dumb troubleshooting steps that we've all already tried. Then a form a bunch of us filled out. I've heard nothing. Meanwhile, this thread gets about 3 new messages a week. Is anyone paying attention over there? (rhetorical question)

Now my thermostat is on the fritz too, turning on aux heat only and overshooting the heating set point.  This stuff has gone to hell since Google took over.

I had the same issue for about a year. The doorcam slowly degraded to where nothing shows at all. No delay or anything. I also have a 1gb connection. I tested out an Arlo doorbell and problem solved. Video takes like 3 seconds. Also higher resolution.

Yep, this is the way.  They are not fixing anything.  Talking heads come in and ask to do basic troubleshooting every few weeks.  The unfortunate part is the expense in equipment we've all made, but I've moved on.  I already have Unifi, so the doorbell is next on the list for replacement. And the old Alexa that was relegated to the basement is now replacing the Hub.  It's the same generation and wayyyy faster.  (plus I can never forgive them for taking AnyList away).  Get Ring or anything else, Nest/Google Home products are eWaste at this point.

ep the loss of AnyList was a definite faux pas.

Same issue here since last week terrible slow. Dhl left he pressed 2 times! and i could go to the local store to pick up my stuff. Today again daughter was already 2 min inside as Google says there is someone at the door. Did Google pushed some updates? Please solve this !!

Same issues here. 600mbs internet, router 3 feet(1 meter) away. Had major issues with getting it installed weeks ago and reinstalled the ring. Went to try it again now and it works, but very slow and inconsistent. Ring was not perfect either, but it did work. 45s to infinite load times are not workable. If this doesnt change soon I'll go back to Ring

I have had my Nest Hello for 6 years. With my Nest Protect products under same app.

I have been ignoring the delay issue for years as not bothering me enough to check for support. Today I was dealing with a neighbor's kids' dispute as making mess in front of my yard by throwing chairs, pumpkins and taking down some school award sign etc... I tried to talk through the microphone and it didnt go through. I end up texting the father of the kid to check on the kids. They took action and had the kids clean up. Point of the story, I couldnt speak up through the mic to alert the kids I am watching and have recording. I want to see pee stain on their pant but dang it didn't happen because I couldn't speak through the mic.

Now seeking for solution BUT reading all these comments has already hinted, its time for me to move on to other competitors.  In fact, the competitors' subscriptions are cheaper than Nest. The day Nest sold its product to Google, it has been downhill for me. Neglect of quality of products. A lesson learned... leave immediately when a smaller company's products get sold to a bigger company. Nothing good when products get to Google. Bye bye Nest.

Glad I found this post. Here are my experience with Nest products.

I have a Nest doorbell (Wireless) and 3 Nest Camera (Wireless). They are nicely built and look pretty. However, similar to the other users, I have an extremely difficult time to load them up in Google Home App (iOS). It usually takes me longer than 20 second to bring up the live feed which is sort of ridiculous... I have a very capable mesh wi-fi network at home and each Nest device is within 15 feet of a router. I don't think it's an issue of my network.

To be fair, the notification/alert are usually very on-time. If somebody shows up at my front door, I would get a notification on my phone with in 3 seconds. However, whenever I try to load them up in the APP, it just takes forever to load (if it loads at all). Today I was showing my friend how bad it is and we timed it, after I opened the Google Home App, it took 43 seconds before the video is shown. The reason I picked Nest product is because I believe in Google's network capability. But it seems it's not the case here. Not sure if Google representative still look at this post, I kind of lost hope reading through this post and seeing so many users have the same issue. My game plan at this point is just to get something else during Black Friday.

I dont know if they are looking, i doubt it. Maybe they can start to implement a tool in Google Home so you can see the strength of a network device? Now everyone is guessing and support is hiding behind it. My Asus router can perfectly see that the network on devices is strong or not  so it is for a developper not rocket science.

The posts about network quality are really misleading. The general issues have nothing to do with the networks. I can see the Nest Doorbell in my network has an excellent connection and should perform perfectly but it just doesn't. See connection details in attached screenshot.

Same slow-to-connect issues with the Nest doorbell. Notification is relatively quick 2-3 sec but connecting to the stream is 60-120 seconds.
Absolutely useless!!!

Same. If I open the app to view the front door it takes about 5s to view the feed. If someone rings the front doorbell and I click the notification, it consistently takes over 30s to view the feed. 30s is far too long to interact.

If I might chime in. I have been dealing with nest for 4 months with this same issue, plus a doorbell that tells me that its in battery savings mode, when its a wired doorbell. For 4 months they continue to ask the same questions over and over again.

1)screenshot of a speed test

2) App and phone OS version

3) Screenshot of the error

4) submit a log.

Once I do that, I never hear back. Once I reach out two times I'm again asked the same questions again. This last time I said that it was obvious that it was not going to work and I'd like my money back, to which they replied that its been too long for a refund due to "buyer's remorse"!! When I told them not wanting something that doesn't work isn't buyer's remorse, the rep hung up on my. They have effectively stolen our money, and don't give a **bleep**. To anyone out there going through trouble shooting steps, I strongly suggest you keep an eye on your time limits.

If I didn’t have 5 Nest devices( doirbell was last device purchased) I would consider another option but I would likely not come close to recooping 25% of my initial investment.
sad that such a big company like Google cannot figure out what the issue is.
