Wired Nest Doorbell (battery) charging issues

I've switched from an older Nest doorbell to the new one and now having trouble with power supply. I've read about power requirements and switched from an older 24V 20VA transformer to a 24V 40VA one. The new transformer delivers 26.2V to the doorbell, tested it. It seemed ok for a few days, but in a week it drained again.

Before it drained to 7% I even limited the use of the doorbell by creating a small zone, turning off motion recording (only left people/animals recording on). I've also terminated my home automation that streamed video from the doorbell to a motion-activated wall-mounted tablet (camera feed would come up when someone approached the tabled).

I am running out of options. Took the doorbell off to charge it via usb-c for the moment.
Any ideas? Could it be something with the transformer?

Thanks for the link, but I'm in CA and it hasn't been cold here. I've read that the doorbell may not be charging at all when power is over 24V. Will try adding a resistor to bring it down a bit.
