Wireless Google Nest Doorbell Keeps Going Offline

Uncl3Mark1

Good afternoon,

I'm having problems with my Wireless Nest Doorbell going offline all the time.  I disconnected the doorbell from the wall, hit the reset button with a pin several times and now the doorbell won't even connect to my wifi now.  When I plugged the doorbell in, the light turned solid white but never flashed blue like the troubleshooting steps said would happen.

The doorbell is about one year old.

I have also had other issues like my Mini's or my Nest Audio speakers also seem to disconnect and not automatically reconnect.  So I thought that it was a wifi issue.

When the Mini and Nest audio devices don't/can't connect I hear a message something like "Can't connect to the internet" but when I check my internet connection (cox wifi) I noticed that it hadn't dropped recently so I'm not sure if that's the problem.

I have a dual band wifi (2.4ghz and 5.0 ghz) so just to try something different I stopped the 2.4 ghz channel but nothing different happened.  Is there a preferred band to try?

I know that this is a lot of info but I figured that the more info the merrier.

Any help is very much appreciated!

Thanks!

Mark

Good evening!

Everything seems to be going great with the doorbell.  As far as I know It hasn't gone offline again and seems to be working just fine.  I think that we can close this case.

Many thanks again!

Mark

Hi Uncl3Mark1,

We apologize for the trouble this has caused you.

To better understand what’s going on, I’d like to ask some questions.

  • How far is the camera from the router?
  • Can the camera find other Wi-Fi networks?
  • What’s the color of the LED status light on the camera?

Give these steps a try:

  • To properly reset the Nest Doorbell Battery — insert and hold the pinhole at the back of the doorbell (you can use an unfolded paper clip or a thumbtack):
  • At 10 seconds, the status light will blink yellow four times, and you’ll hear a countdown tone.
  • At 12 seconds, the status light will be steady, solid yellow while the doorbell starts the factory reset, and you’ll hear a confirmation tone.
  • Release the button. Your doorbell will restore to its factory settings.
  • Make sure that your device and doorbell are on the same Wifi network.
  • Try this link for more information.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Emerson

Hi Emerson,

Thank you for getting back to me, I really appreciate it!  Here's the answers to your questions:

  • How far is the camera from the router? - About 20 feet but I have Cox Wi-fi 'Pods' (wi-fi extenders) hooked up in my house and after running a bandwidth measuring app, there seems to be plenty of signal reaching outside the front door.
  • Can the camera find other Wi-Fi networks? - I don't have any other wi-fi networks to test out on.  The modem I have is dual band 2.4ghz and 5ghz
  • What’s the color of the LED status light on the camera? Well the light never reached yellow for me before because I released the reset button too soon.  Thanks for that tidbit.

So, I just reset the doorbell (battery) and reconnected it to my 5ghz channel.  I'm going to put it back outside to see if/when it drops signal again and I'll keep you posted.

Oh yeah, when the doorbell notifies me that it's offline, is there anyway that I can look up error codes on the doorbell to see why it dropped?  It never notifies me when it goes back online so I never really know for sure if my camera is working.

As for my other devices, I have several Minis that I'm having trouble connecting to the same 5ghz network.  I'm going to try reconnecting those and I'll report back as well.

Thanks again!

Mark

Hello Uncl3Mark1,

Thanks for the response. You may check the error codes on this link. The Nest doorbell goes on idle mode if there's no activity, to preserve its battery. You'll get a notification when there's an event or motion detected.

As for your modem and router, try restarting them and give time to your other devices to reconnect. You may click this link for more information.

Keep me posted.

Regards,
Emerson
