Unfortunately, you can't really troubleshoot this remotely and will need to physically be with the camera.

That’s unfortunate, so if this happens while we are away the camera is useless.
what if I had a wifi enabled switch so I could disconnect power from the camera remotely, would that reset it?

I mean you're welcome to try that, but it depends what the issue is that's caused it to disconnect.
