Adding a Video Chromecast to a speaker group

Trying to setup speaker groups in Google Home, but it appears that a standard Chromecast device cannot be added??

Have multiple devices (Nest Mini/Nest Hubs etc), and these appear as a choice when creating a speaker group, but chromecast not?

Why can't I include these in a speaker group? ie have a chromecast plugged in to an AV amp, and would like to be able to add this... (the amp actually has "Chromecast Built-In", but this has gone missing, as well!)

Thanks.

You can add most Chromecast devices to speaker groups.  The exceptions are the FIRST generation (the key-shaped one) and some "Chromecast Built-in"

Manufacturers of "Chromecast Built-in" devices had to do updates to support speaker groups.  If your device isn't showing, contact the manufacturer to see if they have the update scheduled.  Most did it a long time ago but we're still hearing reports of manufacturers that are way behind in updates.

If you aren't seeing ones that should be showing, reboot the devices and your phone.

Why would Google allow a manufacturer to add "Chromecast Built-In, and then not keep that option up-to-date???

I am sure Apple would not allow that to happen with their hardware/services!

Very poor!

Think I will be looking for other "non-Google" options in the future, if that is the case...

Thank you for helping out on this thread, Byteguy!

Hey there hornetster,

With Chromecast built-in being open-source software, other manufacturers are able to edit and modify the code as they see fit. In this scenario, it's up to the manufacturer to keep up to date on the latest Cast firmware, as Google releases the updates but they don't force updates as it may break their software. Like Byteguy suggested, you would need to contact the manufacturer in this case.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Best regards,
Jeran

Have found that the current Chromecast Built-In version is: V1.36.145856 - This would appear to be way lower than than what I believe is the current version -  V1.52.272222.

Have messaged Pioneer to query.

Cannot believe that Google would licence a technology to a company, who is (or at least, may not be) prepared to keep it updated??

Thanks.

Hiya hornetster,

With the Chromecast built-in being open source, everyone who would like to use the technology can do so. Open-source software is software that is developed and shared publicly, with its source code made available for anyone to view, modify, and distribute. This means that anyone can contribute to the development of open-source software, and that the software can be used for any purpose. Open-source software is often developed in a decentralized way, with different people and organizations working on different parts of the software. This can lead to a more robust and innovative software product, as different people bring their own ideas and expertise to the table. However, this also means companies who use it can also decide not to keep it updated.

I hope that makes sense, and let me know if you have any more questions.

Best regards,

Jeran
