Chromecast 3rd Generation Upgrade to Chromecast with Google TV

The majority of my applications (ie. YouTube, Netflix, Disney Plus, Foxtel Go etc.) stream with decent quality to my 3rd Gen Chromecast (for the most part) yet Optus Sport has huge quality issues. I find that if I watch Optus Sport on the WIFI network on my iPad for example, the quality is perfect yet as soon as I stream it via the Chromecast 3rd gen to the TV it varies terribly in quality (rotates through between bad, ok and decent within a 1 minute span).

I was thinking of getting a Chromecast with Google TV to replace my existing 3rd generation Chromecast with the idea this might solve my issue (ie. downloading and playing the Optus Sport through Google TV).

The thought process being instead of going:

WIFI --> iPad Application (i.e Optus Sport) --> 3rd Gen Chromecast --> TV

It will remove iPad step and thus go:

WIFI --> Google Chromecast with Google TV --> TV

Will changing out Chromecasts actually provide me with a better quality/more reliable streams or is this just wishful thinking?

Hi TristanB,

The service provider can alter the quality of the stream you receive depending on the device you use and your internet bandwidth so please contact them for further information about what quality you can expect to receive.

Linked below is more information from Optus Sports.

Hi TristanB,

Chromecast is designed to pick the best mode supported by the TV and typically the TV will adjust the mode based on the stream. However, if you experience jitters or stutter issues when viewing certain sports content that is encoded for 50Hz, you may try the steps below and check if there's improvement:

  1. Make sure the mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network or signed in or linked to the same account as the Google Nest, Home, or Chromecast device.
  2. From the phone or tablet, open the Google Home app.
  3. At the homepage, tap the device you want to change the settings of.
  4. At the top right corner of the screen, tap Settings.
  5. Within Device settings, scroll down to Video Settings > Use 50Hz HDMI Mode.
  6. Move the slider to the right to turn it on.

Thanks,

Jennifer
