I have a brand new Surface Laptop 4 that is superior in every way to my previous computer. However I have a very strange issue now when I am casing music to my Chromecast Audio device through a browser. The audio player perfectly unless I minimize the browser. After a few moments it becomes very distorted, somewhat like it is skipping but also sounds like it's sped up too.

Hmmm...My conditions to maintain the casting:
a) Chrome must not be minimised.
b) Other application must not be maximised.
Edge has the same problem.

Same issue here on Windows 11. I have been trying everything to figure this out until I found this thread.

I have had this same issue since when using Windows 11. The problem does not exist with Windows 10. I see that this issue was reported to Google in 2022. What is the solution?

I have just joined Nest BECAUSE I HAVE THE ISSUE AS DISCUSSED AT LENGTH BUT all I can see is that there is no REAL attempt by the experts from Nest to really provide a solution.
Beginning to wonder whether Nest Community is worth being a part of??

I got the exact same issue for months now after upgrading to windows 11. i simply stopped using chrome and stopped casting.

well that's for sure one way of resolving the problem! or we could just stop using windows completely and forego google altogether like i know we all should? the web is intended to be completely open to all without any oversight by entities who pretend to "save the sheep from themselves" or worse - google obviously restricts searches performed on their search engine. it's not hard to see that.

windows issue. go to advanced power settings in your control panel > processor power management> set minimums to 100%

Sorry, doesn't work, still garbled

Work around I have now found is to create a New User (can just be a "local", standard user...
Open Chrome in this user and go into the show or whatever you want to watch ...
Cast this to your TV..
Then switch out (<Windows-L>) logon to your normal account and use it as normal
No issue with TV sound being garbled .. Job done

Just keeping this alive. I'm having this issue. Unlike others, I never experienced this issue on Windows 10. It didn't start happening until I "upgraded" to Windows 11.

Not to surprise anyone, but I'm also having this issue. Latest Windows 11 Pro, 7950X3D, 64GB RAM. Ethernet to computer, ethernet to TV, 1000/1000 fiber internet. If chrome/edge, etc. is not in the foreground, BOTH audio and video lag.
How old is THIS thread, and other threads that came before this one, without a solution?
Either the problem cannot be fixed and they need to tell us this, or this issue has not been investigated at all. This issue is VERY easy to reproduce so there is no excuse about the lack of information from Google.
Also, not to be rude, but what is the point of a "community specialist" if the only "help" that they offer is to give you a link to fill out a form or to close the thread? A bot could do that. Where did they go? No word from anybody outside of other users reporting this issue.

This thread appears to have begun in March of 2022, but I could be wrong. Likely there have been several threads started and ended on this very subject - I've no idea if a solution was ever obtained or discovered. I'm still investigating it on my work pc where the problem exists and will advise here if and when I discover what is happening. To me, it sure feels like it has to do with the pc's connection to whatever is being cast TO - aka....the wireless receiver w/ speakers - and that it has nothing to do with the size of any open windows as has been suggested. Cursory, however shallow, acts of minimizing or maximizing windows has no effect either way in my experience.

the issue only happens to windows 11 to my knowledge. I don't even know if it's chrome or some crazy windows optimization that reduces the minimized tab performance. the moment you focus on the tab again it resumes. if you don't minimize the tab or put another widow on top of it, it doesn't happen

I raised a support request with Microsoft today. Not holding out too much hope but I suppose you never know...

Overkill solution but throw up a virtual machine, put linux on it, set the network passthrough obviously and stream from that..
