Chromecast w Google TV frame rate stutter

salputrid

This happens across all apps some more than others.

I am using the Google TV interface.

This was not an issue with the Chromecast 3rd gen when I cast from my iphone.

Hi folks,

I'm sorry for the late response. This has been forwarded to the team and they're looking into this. I'll loop back in once we have an update about this.

Best,

Jennifer

Confirmed!!!
No, it doesn't.

Then I guess it has to do with the app you are streaming with

Well on my device it actually works. Other members also said the same. You are the first one that I see at least who says that this fix does not work.

Hirsty92

It works for me but not really a fix when it reverts every time its rebooted

dos659
Community Member

True, in my setup when I shut down the TV and turn it back on, it does not reboot. It puts itself on hold and wakes up when i tap the home button to go to the connected hdmi, so not an actual problem again in my case.

It doesn’t work for everyone. If you read through the thread or works for most but not all. I’m one of the ones it doesn’t work for.

dos659

That is why i said "first one that I see". These threads are soooo long that is impossible to read.

I guess it really depends on the setup that everyone has and more important on what kind of apps somebody wants to run because from what I can understand, by enabling the "disable HW overlays" does not work as a fix for all the apps.

They let are long and if you reply to someone it doesn’t make it to the bottom. So it’s not sequential and every tough to read. Going in a rant here but when you reply it should quote you post, then my reply and put it at the bottom of the thread like every other message board. Chalk not up to another great advance by google.

After the last firmware update I was not able to go to settings no matter how many times I rebooted I could not go into settings. It would just crash the only way was to do a system reset by pressing the button on the device

So as I stated earlier the stutter stopped when cast from the phone. Now I am noticing when I cast it it goes through the app on Chromecast now. Just leaving it to play a stuttered video.  Stupid. Anyone else notice the video is now opened in the app on the Chromecast instead of a straight cast from the phone?

Dear Google,

I am reporting a persistent stutter bug that requires attention. Additionally, I request a feature enhancement to allow the persistent disabling of hardware overlay after a power cycle.

The stutter bug currently impacts the user experience, and resolving this issue is crucial for smoother device functionality.

Moreover, having the ability to disable hardware overlay persistently, even after a power cycle, would provide users with greater control and flexibility in managing their device settings.

Please prioritize addressing the stutter bug and consider implementing the requested feature enhancement for persistent hardware overlay disablement.

Thank you for your prompt attention to these matters.

Best regards,

Marc

I have a chromecast HD hooked up to an Epson projector I was getting lots of studding then I discovered that my chromecast was defaulting to 4.2.2 12 bit every time I manually change the refresh rate from 24 to 60 and back so I set it to 4.4.4 8bit and now it’s super smooth at all refresh rates.

And that is a setting in the chromecast with google tv?

Yes under color settings

We shouldn’t have to downgrade but I’ll try it.

But when going to 8 bit, you lose a lot of color depth. It just needs to work, without these work arounds.

try each of the Match frame rate content settings. stuttering went away for me with non seamless

Thanks for the idea but tried and failed.  I’ve tried cleverly setting variation. No joy.

Yeah only problem with this chromecast . Yesterday my remote gave up . Had too order a new one . **bleep**ty quality remote .

I have lg projector with a ton of stuttering, the fix for me was changing frame rate matching to "non seamless setting" any other frame rate setting did not fix it.

technology... oh how wonderful modern technology is...plagued with bugs and glitches.... I have similar problem with stuttering with a 6000$ LG projector that happens with any hdmi source.  Lg  wanted 800$ to fix the "problem" with non existent support to determine if its software related. The fix for me was to turn "frame rate matching" to "non-seamless". This fixed the stuttering. Haven't tried the developer overlays disabling option. Turning  the frame rate matching off or on seamless causes stuttering.

Hi if anyone still facing with shutter issue, you can try to update to the lastest update, and switch match frame-rate to Non-seamless, I think the update fixed this shutter issue. Dont use Seamless option, just Non-seamless, since I updated, it worked perfect, I think Google fixed it now.

Before updating, non-seamless and seamless dont smooth and shutter, after updating, non-seamless is all ok!

You can read about it here, why dont choose seamless:

Nope, this does not fix any problem after the latest update... it stutters like a b**ch, so enable the HW overlays option is the only way...

Alexrelexer

I already had it on non-seamless for less problems. Tried it yesterday with regular tv streaming 1080p <24fps. Still stutters (perhaps less). Disabled hardware overlay: problem gone/fluent images.
It looks like if frame interpolation of my TV even can't function, when this option is still enabled

I can only conclude
1. Google lack the skills of fixing an issue they created, which i find hard to believe - they are after all the mighty GOOGLE

2. Does not care at all - this I find the most valid answer to it.

You guy can try to disable manually Dolby digital plus and enable it again or even disable it to test for many case u can, frame-rate must choose Non seamless, or if your TV has game mode, try to use that mode on TV, my TV is LG 65QNED80SRA 120hz, it has Game Optimizer video mode, after switching to that mode, no shutter at all, I just cannot enable True motion (this mode on TV doesn’t support True motion) but it isnt problem to me.

Lastest update seem solved shutter problem, I can use other video modes on my TV without any shutter…

Continue watching added finally.

Disable HD overlay did not solve the stuttering problem, at least not on Disney+. It's horrendous.

Google, please help your customers and give us an update.

Pavlor

I read somewhere online that Disney+ needs more bandwidth otherwise you will have stuttering issues. Try using a good 4K HDMI cable extension and connect your Chromecast with it. I don't think this is an issue with Chromecast

Hirsty92
Community Member

But the Chromecast is directly connected into HDMI. How would an extension solve this? However, I'm having better results as of now since the new update. Let's see how long this continues for!

A cable would not help and only introduce another variable.

With the latest update and HW overlays disabled and match frame rate set to non-seamless, the choppy playback seems now to be app dependent. In Canada so you may not be familiar but Fibe TV and TSN still have a noticeable stutter. But Sportsnet, Plex and Netflix do not. Keep in mind both Fibe and TSN are bell so that is a common thread and could be attributable to poor performance. That said, both did work previously. They both have issues loading as well.  I’m going to chalk this one up to an app issue now. It doesn’t sound like everybody is experiencing the same though. Main take away, still not a great product. I wish you could take the best parts of Apple TV, chromecast and nvidia shield and combine them into 1 streaming device, but such is the world we live in.

Solution? Buy a other brand of streaming device and pray. After so many month (near TWO years) i think this Will Nevers be fixed.

When this bug is going to be fixed? It's driving me mad.

Looks like it's getting less and less likely 😕

The only thing that works for me, which someone else mentioned:

Casting via a different device (e.g. your phone)

But this is no solution, but a workaround, which was - once again - found by users

Just disable hardware overlay after every reboot of the device. It makes watching 1080P or 4K so much better, especially when watching 24fps series/movies. Additionaly I also disabledeverything that is not needed for such a device in the developer options.

Sadly, this doesn't work for me.

Using an app directly on chromecast => judder

Casting via phone, absolutely no judder.

I already tried everything I found here and on reddit.

I even bought an ethernet adapter, just to make sure, it's not caused by packet loss.

This is absolutely outrageous that a device purely designed to play movies can't do it properly. Get your **** together Google and fix this bug finally.

Have been experiencing the stutter issue ever since Android 12, is there any way that the device can be downgraded? For my use case the device is practically unusable in in current state.

A downgrade to an earlier version of Android until a permanent fix is issued seems like a logical thing to offer one's customers....
