Chromecast, wifi pwd change, G Home on phone requires update, no longer compatible

JIMWW

Changed the encryption and password on my Wifi router.  Went to my Phone (Samsung G5, Android 6.0.1) and launched Google home to update the Chromecast (gen 3).  Phone says Home requires update. Update says 'app is no longer compatible with your device anymore - contact developers'.

This is my contact to the developers - please, what can I do ?

That version of Android is very very old, too old to run the Google Home app now. That message about contacting the developer is generic, and the developer in this case is Google.

Chromecast can only be controlled using the Home app. To use the Home app going forward, you will need a modern device that runs a modern version of Android. Or, an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14 or later.

Hey JIMWW,

I just wanted to check if you have additional concerns or questions about your device.

Yes.  I have concerns and questions.

Well, It appears that Google does not have backwards comparability in the product.  It was just a few weeks ago that I resolved this same problem on another chromecast device using this same phone and OS version.  But, now, I am locked out.

Is there not any way to do this from a desktop machine?

Hey JIMWW,

Please note that Chromecast setup on a computer is not supported. Below are the devices that you can use to setup and download the Google Home app:

  • Android phone with Android 8.0 or later
  • Android tablet with Android 8.0 or later
  • iPhone or iPad with iOS 14.0 or late

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Muddi,

Thanks for the reply.  I really appreciate your follow up.

But, since no Android 8 versions in the house, I'm still stuck.

Hey JIMWW,

Sorry to hear that. Would it be possible for you to borrow a phone/tablet from a family member or friend to set up your Chromecast? Once you set it up, you can cast using your desktop computer from a Chrome browser.

Muddi
