Gen 3 Chromecast audio stuttering

mmeph

I just got a gen 3 Chromecast in the mail and the audio stutters every 3-5 seconds casting anything. All relevant Google Support forum posts redirect to this site and I find it extremely frustrating I can't see old resolutions there.

Everything I have tried below:

  1. Verified TV speakers are good using other devices (laptop and consoles plugged into TV directly)
  2. Verified it happens in other apps and not just YouTube (Netflix, Hulu, etc.)
  3. Verified it happens no matter the device that is casting the content (iOS, Android, MacOS, and Windows)
  4. Verified it happens on another gen 3 I also got today

How can I fix this issue? I don't want to return these, but I absolutely will if this is how they perform.

Hey there,

I apologize about the late response, thank you for being patient! Were you able to fix that audio issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • What is the firmware version of your Chromecast?
  • What version of the Google Home app are you using?
  • Does the video stutter, or does the video quality suffer at all?
  • Does it also occur when casting from Google Chrome?
  • Have you tried changing the HDMI port that the Chromecast is plugged into?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Jeran,

You're a little late as I returned them already, but answer your questions:

  • I was on the latest (can't remember the version number, but I verified there were no updates at all)
  • Latest as well (same as above)
  • Both video and audio stuttered/skipped with no decrease in quality
  • Occurred when casting from iOS, Android, Windows, and MacOS
  • I tried many TVs/displays, all resulted in the same issue

Never happens with my older Chromecast Ultra, only these newer ones. I even tried hardwiring it with the ethernet adapter from my older Chromecast. Thanks for getting back to me, but the issue was resolved by returning them and going back to the "old-fashioned" plugging in my laptop.

Thanks

Oh, shoot. I'm really sorry to hear that the 3rd Generation Chromecast was having that stuttering issue, it may have been something to do with it not playing nicely with your network, or it could have been a defective model. I'm glad to hear you were able to return it. I don't suppose you would have any other questions or concerns that I could address?

Best regards,

Jeran
