How to connect Chromecast to new wifi without a remote?

poohbear1

I lost the remote to one of my Chromecast devices (2nd generation), and I also moved to a new home which uses a different WiFi router.  My question is, how can I connect this Chromecast to my new WiFi network if there is no remote available?  I cannot use the Android remote method because, again, the Chromecast is not on the network.

Any help is appreciated!

Hey there poohbear1,

Welcome to the Chromecast Community Forum! The only Chromecast device with a remote is the Chromecast with Google TV, your older 2nd generation Chromecast wouldn't have one. To connect that Chromecast to your new Wi-Fi network, you would need to factory reset the Chromecast. Go ahead and follow these steps:

While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV, hold down the button on the side of the Chromecast. The LED should begin to blink orange. When the LED light turns white, release the button and the Chromecast should then restart.

That's all there is to it! From there, you should be able to set it up on the new network like normal. If you have any other questions or concerns, please let me know.

Best regards,

Jeran

Hi Jeran,

After I factory reset, I connected it to my TV and followed the steps.  It asked me to open up my Google Home app, which I did.  The Google Home app recognized the device but said "Chromecast found. It needs to be activated before setup - This device has a few extra steps before you can start setup. Go to the Help Center to learn more."  I clicked "Go to Help Center", after which I go to "United States (US)", which then states "If your device has Google TV or Android TV, you can use the setup flow on your TV to activate your device. You can try to use another non-Pixel phone to set up your device. For non-Google products, please contact the device manufacturer for help. Otherwise, contact us for help."

This is where I'm stuck. I appreciate your help!

Hey there poohbear1,

That is interesting! Is this Chromecast a black, round device with an HDMI cord; or a white, oblong device that came with a remote? If it is the first model, here are the instructions on how to get that device set up. If you have the second, white device, then here are the set-up instructions for that one. If you have the Chromecast with Google TV, the white device, you may be able to use your phone as a virtual remote to set up the device.

I look forward to your response on this!

Best regards,

Jeran

It is a white, circle Chromecast, with the model/serial numbers A4RNC2-6A5B and MC2-6A5 printed on it (I think 2nd generation maybe?)

I don't think the instructions you shared work for me.  Any help you can give is appreciated.

Hiya poohbear1,

Hmm, no problem at all. I think in this scenario, it may be best to have you reach out to Chromecast support, as they would be able to walk you through the process. After you get past the initial steps on the contact form, you should have an option to talk with them via online chat or phone call.

I hope that helps, and if you had any more questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,

Jeran
