I'm getting ads on my Chromecast (2nd Generation) and I do not know why.
This problem started a couple of days ago when I started getting ads on YouTube-videos on my (Chromecast 2nd gen) even though I have Youtube Premium Lite (It is a cheaper version of Premium but the difference is that it only removes ads, it is so far only available in Europe). This has never been an issue before.
I figured this would stop I logged in but when I tried to log in I received this error message:
Basically it says in Swedish that I can't log in to this TV but that I can still watch as a guest.
I rarely watch YouTube on anything other than my Chromecast so it would be good to know if I should end my subscription to Premium Lite or if this problem can be solved.
BIG UPDATE: YouTube is now claiming on my post about this on Twitter that this issue has been solved. But from what I see it hasn't because alot of YouTube-users are still commenting on this post and showing photos which clearly shows this is still a problem.

Apparently it is intentional, without letting us know. I will ask for a refund until logging in has been restored by Google/Youtube! I will NOT watch ads while using Premium.
06-17-2022 08:56 PM
I pay for premium and I find as long as I use my android YouTube app to browse for videos and then connect to Chromecast when I view the video, then I don't get ads. Even though my Chromecast is not logged in. If I use my android YouTube app as a controller for my Chromecast, then I DO get ads. I hope that helps as a temporary solution until Google allows us to log in again.

Count me in the issue as well. It seems Google doesn't care.
Roku here I come.
06-18-2022 08:31 AM
I've been studying up on the Roku for the last couple of days, too. I have 5 Chromecast devices that are all broken now. Had planned to put a Chromecast with Google TV on our main tv and send the Chromecast Ultra to another room.. but pretty upset with this apparently deliberate move by Google.. and still haven't seen anything contradicting the deliberate nature of the decision, nor have I seen anything to say they are going to fix it.
There's apparently a side issue with people not being able to log in on some iOS devices.. not sure if related.
Still, a statement from team YouTube saying it was deliberate is pretty annoying.

Just adding my name to the list of disgruntled premium users.
When the video I send to my TV ends, my toddler instantly points to the picture of what he wants to see next, excitedly going 'brrm' if there are cars in the thumbnail, but now I can't just select it with the remote and watch with him without also having to deal with adds.
I'm paying extortionate prices for no actual content (YouTube doesn't generate any), only the removal of adds, and now you're purposely breaking the app you're forcing me to use?
I hope you give this a serious rethink.
06-18-2022 12:47 PM
Same issue here. Was definitely signed in before and I liked using my TV remote (which can control the Chromecast via HDMI-CEC) to watch videos and not get ads.
At least it's nice knowing I'm not alone and hopefully this will get fixed soon.

Class action, now there's something to consider about. I'm sick of this spineless weaseling, not responding to PAYING CUSTOMERS. Browsing with a phone is not an option for us who have poor near sight vision.

Just a for your information post, this is a community forum supported by other users that are part of the Product experts program and community specialist's.
The best way to report this issue is by sending feedback for the Chromecast team as described within the link below and make sure that your log files are 'checked' as being included.
Feedback:

thanks! I have submitted a feedback for this. being able to sign in is such a basic setting, can’t believe they removed it intentionally!
06-22-2022 12:47 AM
They did. They want you to buy the Chromecast with Google TV for $50 before they release the budget version.
06-18-2022 01:33 PM
My intention was not to blame anyone in this forum. Just venting the frustration of this situation. Since those official feedback forums don't give any responses, we're merely payers.
06-18-2022 02:09 PM
I am also having the same issue. It tells me to sign in but when I press it it said cannot sign in, can't even put in my email etc.
06-18-2022 02:35 PM
The quickest way to get a response from Google is to cancel all your paid google services.
06-18-2022 06:15 PM
I have had this for weeks and am through waiting for Google to fix this off their own backs.
I've submitted feedback reports on Google Home & the Android YouTube app, and tweeted a summary of what I sent to them here: https://twitter.com/empydoodle/status/1538326369574207488
06-18-2022 09:13 PM
I think the fact that they are choosing to not respond to this thread any longer is proof that they are ignoring and lack appreciation for customers.

Now the YouTube team once more confirmed that you can no longer sign in on old chromecasts. Could of course be that they are just confirming the users problem, but sound a lot like the tweet the other day. And that is was not a question to the user, just a statement.

Such a bad handling of customers.
06-18-2022 10:39 PM - edited 06-21-2022 12:32 PM
Well... Sign in works fine on my old Roku stick. I won't ever buy another google product or service.
06-18-2022 09:59 PM
Es increíble como Google sigue arruinando sus productos esperando a que compremos lo último que lanzan al mercado. Cada día se parecen más a Apple 🤦♂️
06-21-2022 02:17 AM
Ironically, they might drive more people to Apple… since even the Pixel “a” series phones turned huge, I bought an iPhone 12 and am threatening to get AppleTV now. I’ve had too many issues with Chromecast lately. This is only the latest.
06-21-2022 02:27 AM
Haha yeah.. I've been pro Google since the first HTC Magic, and have only owned HTCs, Nexus and Pixels since. My boys have all android devices. My partner and her daughters have nothing but iPads, MacBooks, and iPhones.
The suggestion that Apple TV is better has been made. I'm not yet convinced it's worth the extra expense, but Google would be wrong to discount my disgust at not even telling us what the plan is.
06-21-2022 02:31 AM
When I got married, my wife and stepdaughters all had iPhones. I converted them with my Chromebook, HTC One M8 (all HTC since Droid Eris/Hero, up to and including Pixel XL). Now every television has had at least one Google casting device. Then I switched back to Windows and got myself an iPhone. Noticing a trend, Google?
06-19-2022 04:11 AM
I don't understand why I can't sign in to youtube on my chromecast anymore... this just ruins my viewing experience
hope this gets fixed soon
06-19-2022 04:22 AM
Happens here as well.
06-19-2022 12:26 PM
Having same issue, started days ago. For some mysterious reason, Chromecast signed me out from my YouTube account(s) and I can't sign back in! Tried all the steps here, rebooted and reset everything but issue is still persistent.
Hope Google will resolve it soon as it is very annoying and it shows my son unwanted bad irrelevant content!
06-19-2022 01:46 PM
No solution yet... Come on!
This new YouTube app has been terrible from the the start, even before this bug. Who needs this TV interface? The old way was much more fitting for Chromecast. One very annoying feature: one cannot pause a video too look at an image (very common when watching lectures with a sense whiteboard). Now half the screen is taken by stupid thumbnails 😡
06-19-2022 01:56 PM
When paused, you can view the entire screen by pressing up twice on the controller. Not obvious at all, but I think of it as moving the focus up to the screen.
I wish there was an option to go straight to screen focus every time you pause.

Is it possible that google did this to eliminate the personalized recommended content and show us their "trending" garbage instead? Some of what they list is outright repulsive and should not be shown without some kind of warning. But I guess caution and censorship only apples if you're a normal human.

I very much doubt this, but you should ask YouTube specific questions over on their own community forum, linked below.....

06-21-2022 02:11 AM
I had this thought as well.
I watch who I want to watch, and if THEY recommend something else, I check them out.
06-19-2022 02:38 PM
Possibly, I got a lot of rubbish recommended as well. And I got ads again. I hope Youtube/Google wil asap fix this back to the normal situation and let us login again.
06-19-2022 10:51 PM
This issue is also on the gen3 mine started acting up about a week ago now
06-19-2022 10:57 PM
Yeah, I think it's all Chromecast before the Google TV model. TeamYouTube said it was intentional, it appears they are trying to force us to upgrade. Google TV are about $80 here, and we have 5. I'm extremely salty about the $400 additional cost just to continue to enjoy the $18/month I spend on YouTube premium.
06-21-2022 02:14 AM
If they do stuff like this, I’m done with Chromecast. Works fine on my Sony Bravia without the Chromecast, haven’t tried it on my Ultra. The kid is not complaining about her new “With Google TV” model. I don’t know if her sister is having this issue with her Nexus Player (older than dirt!)
06-21-2022 02:20 AM
For now, I've renamed the **bleep**ty LG interface to "For YouTube", because even that terrible Korean interface allows being logged in to YouTube.
The Chromecast Ultra has been renamed "The effin ad Machine", and I'm only using it for Netflix and casting MotoGP.
Still researching what my non-Chromecast options might be.

In New Zealand it has been just announced that Chromecast with Google TV is available from Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at Noel Leeming, The Warehouse, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and PB Tech. RRP; NZ$110.00
You can follow this thread on Twitter for my opinions on it
Please make use of the tag #ChromecastCantSignIn on all social media to keep the pressure on YouTube to restore sign in to as many of the older Chromecasts as possible.
06-20-2022 05:41 PM
Same here. Eight days.
06-21-2022 12:33 AM
Same situation here. I'm angry because I'm paying for the **bleep** premium and can't even watch videos on chromecast properly!
06-21-2022 02:04 AM
THIS RIGHT HERE
06-21-2022 09:33 AM
Same problem here. “Can’t sign in” on tv when casting youtube from android phone to ultra chromecast.
Will Google be in touch with us when it’s fixed?

So I have explicitly asked the YouTube team if there was any advanced warning given for this deprecation, and for a link to said notification - this is the exchange (viewable here and in replies):
--- [me]
I'm afraid I was not privy to any advance notification about this extremely disappointing removal of (what I deem) vital functionality before it took effect. Could you kindly share a link to this, please?
--- [@TeamYouTube]
While you may not get a response, we review feedback given. This is how we collect info and prioritize requests.
--- [me]
So the answer is "no, because we didn't send any advance notification of feature deprecation". You can see how that looks to loyal customers, right? It looks like underhanded planned obsolescence.
---
So... yeah. If I were to be optimistic, I'd summarise that as, "not hopeful".
However I have made a suggestion as to how they could provide recompense for this issue:
--- [me]
I would suggest that you set up a giveaway of the newer Chromecast that DOES actually support this functionality to all customers paying for YT Premium. Else I fear you will lose a lot of them (including me).
---
I will keep this thread updated with anything they respond with, if anything.
However it may be worth holding on a little bit longer - if I thought of it, someone on their end must have.
To increase the possibility that this might actually be heeded, I encourage as many of you as are willing to go to the @TeamYouTube Twitter page and make a similar complaint and, if unsatisfied with their response, let them know as best you can how much that affects your decision to continue paying for their services.
(My original complaint to them is at the top of the thread linked at the start of this post).
REMEMBER TO TAG ALL OF THE APPLICABLE ACCOUNTS WITH EVERY RESPONSE YOU MAKE, otherwise they'll ignore you - to reiterate, they are:
@TeamYouTube @YouTube @YouTubeCreators @Google @madebygoogle @GoogleUK
Should you also wish to do so, others have added the #ChromecastCantSignIn tag their threads, which certainly makes sense (especially if it ends up trending and become more visible). Up to you guys, though.
I'm a big fan of Google, and would be hugely upset if they did not end up doing the right thing. However, even if they don't, it hopefully makes it less likely that they will pull this kind of stunt again.
Good luck, everyone!
