Power using USb

I have a mounted tv and all wires hidden behind the wall. The new Chromecast requires power from an outlet not the usb on the tv. Why can't I use the USB on the computer. If I can't, I need a really long cable to get to the power through the wall.

Thanks for sharing.. I couldn't figure out why my chromecadt wasn't starting up.. won't run on the USB port from the TV.. needed to plug it into the wall outlet.. sorry it's not easy for you to do that.. definitely an annoying limitation.

Chromecast devices are small computers that require a significant amount of power to operate

Most TVs' usb ports are for data-only and don't provide enough power for electronics like that.

Also, many TVs turn off their ports when you turn off the TV. That takes your Chromecast off-line so it doesn't get updates and it has to reboot/reconnect every time you turn on your TV.

Some people do use their USB ports and it works (but, not on the Ultra models). However, it is not suggested and is very much "do so at your own risk."

I completely understand the need for power for what it's doing. But the thing I don't understand is how I've had three other Chromecast and they didn't require it. The updates done bother me much as I can do that when I use the device. Is there a longer cord I can find that can be used since I'd like to hide wires

Thank you for your help here, Byteguy!

Hey there kB89,

No matter the Chromecast model, Google always recommended powering the Chromecast device via a wall outlet rather than the USB port on the TV. The newer Chromecast with Google TV devices are also more powerful, thus needing more power in general. If the cable provided with the device isn't long enough, you are able to use any USB-C to HDMI cable that you find.

I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

It seems like it would be wise for Google to state this in the Chromecast set up instruction pamphlet that comes in the box.. would save us all a bunch of time and avoid potential problems..

Thanks for this info 🙂

Hey there GF4,

Of course! It's pretty strange that it doesn't state that the manual doesn't to be honest, since the articles online do. I'll pass this up to make them aware of it. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Thank you,
Jeran
