casting from mini does not show videos to choose from. no overlay

when asking a mini to play videos from youtube it tells me to choose a video but shows no options. there's been an overlay for years with thumbnails of videos but now nothing

the mini continues to listen.. i can pick a random number... and the video plays

 

also when telling a hub display to play music on a max speaker - again, no overlay with album art, just ambient art

 

where have all my overlays gone and does anyone have a workaround? chromecast is dead in the water as it is

Thanks for reaching out — let's see what's going on. 

 

A few questions: are you casting from your Home Mini to your Chromecast? When you play music from your Google Nest Hub to your other speakers what music provided are you using? Also, when you say overlay is it the ambient mode you're referring to?

 

Take note: 

 

Make sure your devices are connected to the same network and within 15-20 feet of your router.

All your speakers or displays should be using one Google Account.

I have the same issue with Google Nest Mini as described by eighty666: casting from Nest Mini to Chromecast. Google Nest suggests to pick from several options that are displayed on the TV screen, but nothing shows up.

Hey antanask,

 

What's the exact image or message you're seeing on the screen when you're casting using your Nest Mini? Are you getting the same result when manually casting from your phone? Also, could you try rebooting your devices and router to refresh the connection?

I'm having the exact same issue.

Ask Mini to show me videos on YouTube via the chrome cast -

"Ok Google, show me Peppa Pig videos on Youtube"

 

Mini does its thing and then tells me it is showing me Peppa Pig option on the Chromecast, which one would I like.

 

But there is nothing showing on the screen.

 

I can randomly pick a number and it will start playing.

 

But there is no actual list of options showing like there used to be up until about 2 weeks ago.

Hey BarnDawg,

 

Have you tried the suggested steps above? When you mentioned nothing is showing on your Chromecast, is it stuck with black screen? Have you tried resetting your Chromecast?

stays with ambient art showing. not black. ambient art.

 

if you wireshark the multicast there's nothing there. resetting a chromecast will not fix a completely broken server thousands of miles away. especially not one run by obtuse, unhelpful folk who will do ANYTHING to escape taking ownership of an issue

I've tried all the problem solving steps. I've reset my chromecast. There is nothing.

 

The mini TELLS me there is something on the screen, but there are no options. It's just ambient mode showing screensaver pictures. No YouTube options show up as an overlay to the background.

 

The mini THINKS it's doing it. But the chromecast doesnt do it.

 

I can choose an option, like saying "One" and it will play video 1 that it THINKS it is displaying to me, but I'm just randomly guessing as I can't actually see the options.

Just got my anniversary badge for my first post in this forum.

Google has given me a badge to celebrate being IGNORED for an entire year by customer service.

Zero updates despite being "rest assured" they were working on it.

Prime Day is 11/12th July folks. Get your Smart gear overhauled with Alexa. At least Amazon fix their problems and reply to customers.

You explain the issue perfect. Still Google struggle to understand and so you've been ignored. Awesome customer support Google!

I have same trouble, I thought perhaps foolishly it was because I raised my voice and used bad language. Now I'm thinking more like deliberate obsolescence.

I am having the exact same problem, started sometime in June. Google  Home thinks it's displaying YouTube video options but Chromecast shows nothing.

Surely Google has a fix for this by now? It used to work fine. Just roll back the version and push it out!!!

the products are dead in the water. suggest scrapping them and moving to alexa

 

nest doorbells don't work on samsung microphone arrays since 2019

giving a scene a room broken since 2018

jbl speakers have a broken eq since 2020

chromecast overlays broken 2022

 

none of these things are EVER going to be fixed. alphabet inc needs us to put our chromecasts in landfill and buy shiny lemon scented google tv instead

Same issue here, 2 months and no fix?  I'm with the guy who said we should dump these POS for alexas.  I'd have already done  it if I wasn't so broke right now.

How about, instead of telling us you are still working on it, you tell us HOW you are working on it, and WHAT has been found so far.

Cause otherwise its just a fortnightly cuddle to keep us reassured Google is actually doing something about the issue, with absolute zero update. Which is absolutely pointless.

Google person who is going to respond (eventually) tell us WHAT you have done and the result of what you have done so far.

 

Nothing vague. Hit us with specifics, like we are adults. Tell us what the problem is and why you are struggling to fix something that was working for so long.

It was working. You changed something. Now it's not working. What did you change? Why has it affected it? Why haven't you rolled back the changes? Why haven't you fixed Why you have broken? Why don't you care about your customers?

Actually answer some questions.

Just brought a Nest mini. Same issue. It says it's showing me options to pick but only shows ambient chrome cast screen. Have to pick a random number and some random video starts playing.

I'm having the same issue on my setup. I have a Nest Mini and it works wonderfully but doesn't actually show anything on the screen when it says to choose an option on the screen. 

 

It is connected since it works when searching for a single video but only when trying to search for videos from YouTube will it not actually display the options on my Chromecast.
