there's no way to use chromecast from laptop, is only guiding you through phone or tablet, and casting from google browser doesn't work either

You should be able to cast from the Chrome browser.

To expand on this, you must be on the same wifi network for this to work. Some routers use separate networks for 2.4 ang 5ghz, if that is your case casting would not work.

Yes, good point, thank you. I do use separate SSIDs for the two RF bands, just so I can keep track of them. At the moment, that was not the problem. Later, I powered off the Chromecast and restarted it. THAT got it to show up on the Available Device list.
