Big Ass Fans ceiling fan not recognised as fan device by Google Nest

RodG
Community Member

I’ve successfully integrated my big ass fans into google nest and they appears as device type fan. However when I issue a voice command to turn on or off the fan it’s not recognized. The only way to control it is to use its full name. Is anyone else experiencing this issue ? And is there a fix ? I’ve tried relinking the integration to google nest but it doesn’t resolve the issue.

Hi RodG,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

I wanted to follow up and see if I could be of any help. You can try to rename your fan then observe if it will make a difference. Check the instructions below.

You can choose names to call your smart home devices.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. At the top right, tap Settings Settings icon and then Name.
  4. Enter a name and then tap Save.

Note: Nicknames are alternate ways to reference smart devices in the Google Home app. The nicknames you assign to smart devices in the Google Home app are not reflected in the device maker’s app.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Juni

Hi Juni

The fan is named "ceiling fan" and is in the same room as my google assistant. The fan was previously running the old Big Ass  software. If I called out "turn off fan" Google would recognise the celiing fan as a fan and turn it off. Since upgrading to the new Big Ass software and integrating it with Google. When I call out "turn off fan" , it says it's trying to turn off other fans like the toilet exhaust. It only responds when I say "turn off ceiling fan" . So for some reason, google is not recognising it as a fan even though it's device type is fan.  As another example, I have two big ass fans in another room. When I call out "turn off fans", google doesn't recognise them as fans and tries to turn off othe fans like the toilet exhaust instead. As mentioned earlier, it was working with the old Big Ass Fans integration, but no longer with the new Big Ass Fans integration.

Hi there,

Thanks for the details, Let's go ahead and unlink then relink your fan app, then observe if the issue remains. Check the steps below.

Disconnect devices from the Google Home app:

Note: You cannot unlink individual devices. When you remove one device through these steps, it removes all devices by that service.

When you unlink a device from a home:

  • It disconnects the device for all members of the home.
  • It unlinks the device from your Google Account.
  1. Make sure your devices are powered on.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. Tap Settings Settings icon and then unlink your linked service and then tap Unlink.

Keep me posted.

Thanks,

Juni

Hi Juni,

I have unlinked and then relinked the Big Ass Fans integration as instructed and still have the same issue.

Hi Dan,

I have made a further observation and believe it is an issue with Google, I require someone to investigate. If I refer to the fan as singular "fan", Google does not recognise it. If I refer to the fan as plural "fans" it work. For example, in my office I have one fan named "Office Fan" and one google assistant. If I say "hey google, turn on fan", it doesn't recognise there is a fan in the office so tries to control the toilet exhause fan in another room. However, if I say "hey google turn on fans", it turns on the office fan. I tested with other rooms as well, google is doesn't recongise the device type "fan" but only the device type "fans"

Hi again,

I really appreciate the information you provided. On the troubleshooting that you did, it works with "fans" but doesn't on "fan". How about if you change the name of your office fan to something else without the word fan let's tell me how it goes.

Best regards,

Dan

Hi Dan

I renamed the fan in the Big Ass app to “Master Bedroom” then synced all devices in Google. The fan name changed to “Master Bedroom” in Google Home. Same issue is still occurring, if I say “hey google turn on fan” it is not recognized, if I say “hey google turn on fans” it works.

Hi RodG,

Thanks for bearing with us. I know that you've already changed the name but I do need to request one more time on the name change. This time around, be specific on the name change, for example, "Master Bedroom Fan" or "Office Fan". When you give a voice command, give the specific name of the device.

By the way, what are the Nest speakers you're using?

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan

Same issue still happening for both the office and master bedroom after I renamed them to “Office Fan” and Master Bedroom Fan”. The assistant in the Office is a Nest Mini, the assistant in the Master Bedroom is google assistant running on a Sonos Beam. I also have a fan in the living room with a Nest Hub, same issue.

Hey there,

Thank you for the effort and on doing those steps. I do need a little bit more from you. If you can, make sure that all your devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. I would also like to know what Nest devices do you have and which of those are not responding correctly when asking about your fans?

Best,

Dan

Hi Dan

The fans and google nest devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. All devices do not respond correctly. I have a three Nest Mini's, one Nest Hub and one google Assistant running on a Sonos Beam.

Hi RodG,

Apologies for the delayed response.

We might need to go further and do a factory reset on one or all of your Nest speakers and display. It's to revert it back to its default and original settings. You need to set it back up. Open this link on how to do a factory reset. If you know how to, you can also reset your fan to start fresh. Set them all on the same Wi-Fi network and give a command and see what happens.

Keep me posted.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan

I performed a factory reset on the speakers and still having the same issue. I even installed a new Nest Hub and same issue.

Hello there,

We really appreciate the effort and patience, RodG! If doing the reset didn't help, and installing a new Nest Hub had the same behavior, wouldn't it say that possibly the fans program only receives specific commands and keywords? Using your new Nest Hub, have you tried changing its name without the word "fans" or "fan"?

Tell me how it goes.

Dan

Hi Dan

We’ve been through this earlier. ok, I changed the name to “apple”, same issue, only responds to fans to fan. Surely others with Big Ass fans can verify this same issue ?

Hi RodG,

I understand. I'd suggest contacting your device manufacturer for additional help. There might be some settings that they need to check or configure on your fan.

Keep us posted.

Hey Dan, looks pretty obvious its a google issue. How about you also forward this to your support team for investigation. If you can’t for what ever reason, how do I go about escalating this to your support team ?
