Can I use a Nest Protect in a furnace closet? Do I need to upgrade my Protects?

My furnace is almost 30 years old.

I asked my HVAC technician for telltale signs my natural gas furnace is on its way out and they said a carbon monoxide leak, from the furnace's heat exchanger, is one sign.

I have Nest Protects I bought several years ago installed elsewhere in my home.

Two questions:

  1. Will a Nest Protect malfunction in a furnace closet?
  2. Do I need to install the same Nest Protect model I installed elsewhere in my home or will a new Nest Protect work with my older Nest Protects?

  1. To avoid nuisance alarms, carbon monoxide alarms should be 15-20 feet from water heaters or furnaces. Regulations actually recommend against installing combination smoke/carbon monoxide alarms in furnace rooms, or any room that contains a water heater or a furnace.

  2. Nest Protect (Wired 120V or 230V) and Nest Protect (Battery) are compatible and can interconnect with each other.

Hope this helps!
