Within last couple days, unable to cast (Netflix). After factory reset the Chromecast, seems all is good. Device found and select to connect. But, keep getting "... couldn't authenticate your Chromecast"

Same issue "can't authenticate..." with android phone and unable to connect with wifi via iPhone setup it's been more than 72 hrs unable to get hold of Google support team this is really frustrating

Same issue. I changed my internet provider, so I reset my chromecast to factory settings. No longer working after that.

Has anyone got a solution yet on how to fix if you've already reset it
03-11-2025 08:58 PM
No luck yet. Not everyone has the money to replace with a new device. For me 160 Aussie dollars

I will never buy another google device after this, we've been abandoned. Google aren't interested in this problem. Probably because it's planned obsolescence. They want us to buy the latest device.

same issue here
03-14-2025 07:42 AM
Any updates
03-14-2025 08:03 AM
No updates so far , also issue still persist , no help from Google on tickets as well.
not sure if google don't want us to use the 5 or 10 year old devices.

Per news source, Google has began distributing update that fixes Chromecast 2 and Chromecast Audio. (Found the news by googling "chromecast", by the way.) But those who have reset their device must wait longer for a fix.
For those who are wondering why Google doesn't respond to support requests, my guess is that their support is currently completely clogged because of the issue with Chromecasts.

I couldn't cast from Netflix and so I factory reset my Chromecast now when trying add the device in the Google Home app I'm getting:
We couldn't authenticate your Chromecast. Please visit support.google.com/chromecast for help troubleshooting this issue.

Attention!
I had earlier reconnected Chromecast to Google Home (Android) by setting my phone's date to 7.3.2025 (works as long as it's earlier than 9.3.2025). Just short ago I decided to check what happens when I start Chromecast, and behold! It instantly updated itself, and now it works just as supposed to!
In my case, strange is that Chromecast still doesn't indicate it would be connected to a network (stopped after resetting), yet it works anyway.
So, just set your phone's date to earlier than 9.3.2025 and try connecting with Google Home. After connection is made, wait for Chromecast to update itself.

thank you thank you thank you!! have been fighting with this for days....I even ordered another device (non chromcast which is no longer made(???)) and it didnt work either until I tried your trick! you're awesome.

You're welcome! I just hope more people would read this thread, instead of continue complaining.
Yes, Chromecast is no longer made. Its successor is Google TV, which is more expensive device, nearly thrice the price of what Chromecast was.
03-14-2025 10:51 AM
Mine is working again, just reboot your chromecast and when it starts wait for the update, it should be ready to cast after that
03-14-2025 10:54 AM
If no reset is done, or reconnected after reset, then yes, this should work.

When the 4 number & letter verification appears on TV screen to authenticate, another message will pop up on all devices with google home saying "could not authenticate your Chromecast" & you can't get past that. It starts a loop using same message. Can't even reboot from app as it will not read the device. Before google posted the message do not reset, I followed directions which said do a factory reset.
If you have a 1st Gen Chromecast it works, as I have two that I'm glad i kept. Just hook it up, DONT RESET, i used my original home. It will say offline, but it's not, just click cast screen & it will mirror whatever is on your device.

No I reseted it, reboot it all possible since before yesterday but now it's working. Have a 2nd gen FYI

Google hs abandoned us. There is only a problem, not a solution. Never purchase a physical product off them again. I feel like this is a case of planned obsolescence.
03-18-2025 04:04 AM
Either planned obsolescence, or someone got very, very sloppy.
There is a solution mentioned in this thread.
On Google's end, it's not an easy thing to fix, as they need to create a solution that works "indefinitely" without creating a security hole in Google Home, and has as small impact on the app as possible. And since Google hasn't made it public about what went wrong, they seem to be embarrassed of it.

Google has issued an update for Google Home that should help with connecting to resetted Chromecast. Update Google Home to version 3.30.1.6 on Android or 3.30.106 [Wide] on iOS.
03-18-2025 06:53 AM
The Google home update isn't showing in my appstore?
03-18-2025 07:16 AM
Probably takes some time to show up, as updates usually are distributed in delayed manner, so that servers wont choke up. I've sometimes received updates that are released months before, even though I've manually checked updates just week ago.
