Wired nest doorbell - do you need nest aware to playback thumbnails?

When I first got the wired Nest doorbell, I could scroll back and play almost anything.  Now I see thumbnails on the iphone app and if I click one, it just shows a still image.  There's no playback.

Here:

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9681538

Says "Up to 3 hours of event video history"  But even if this event was just a few mintues ago, I can only see "live" video.

Do I really have to resubscribe to Nest Aware to see live video, even if its within the last 3 hours?  If so, Google should update that FAQ page.

It sounds like you have the Google Nest Hello Doorbell. (We have 3, and the internal battery has failed on all 3, so we've turned off the "Indoor chime" as well.) Without a subscription, you only get still photos for the most recent 3 hours.

The link below shows what you get with each type of subscription on each camera and doorbell.

The Nest Aware subscription is $6/month or $60/year. The Nest Aware Plus subscription is $12/month or $120/year. (In the US.) Both cover ALL cameras and doorbells in the same Google Nest "home/structure".

I suppose you could contact Google Nest Support about buying a 1st gen subscription for just your Nest Hello Doorbell, but you can't do that online, and I don't know the price.

It sounds like you may have had the 30-day free trial Nest Aware subscription when you first got your doorbell.

Without a subscription, it depends on which "wired Nest doorbell" you have.

If you have the Google Nest Hello Doorbell, then you SHOULD get photo snapshots for the most recent 3 hours in the Google Nest app.

If you have the 2nd Gen Google Nest Doorbell, then you SHOULD get event video history for events in the most recent 3 hours in the Google Home app. If you are only getting still images, go to your camera in the Google Home app and go to Settings | Events | Event history and check which option is selected.

I’m not sure which generation I have.  I can see some thumbnails but I can’t enlarge them in any way, except maybe the one most recent.  The timeline goes back 3 hours but it does not “play” anything.  Yes I had nest aware for 1 year and did not renew because I had more pressing bills to cover.  But on googles link it said 3 hours of video and I was ok with that.

It is a wired doorbell, in fact I upgraded the doorbell transformer to make it more stable.  However with that being said a lot of us discovered and was mislead that even though it’s wired there is still a battery in it.  I have indoor chime tuned off because that’s the only way to allow it to not “spontaneously reboot” on doorbell presses, but we get notifications on tv, phone and smart speakers anyway.  I’m wondering if this means the model I gave is “too old” to do video then?  I did get it because it’s much sleeker and narrower than a Ring.  The Ring is just so big and boxy and I really don’t like that chime.

Is there any cheaper plan to view at least a little video from this?  I don’t need face detection and all that.
