Adding older devices to Goggle Home

LEH
Community Member

I just bought a Nest Doorbell and tried to install it on the Nest app, where I use our other Nest devices, and found that I couldn’t install it. I contacted Support and was told that it is not possible to add the doorbell to the Nest app and I would have to use the Goggle Home app. So, I tried installing all of our devices on the Goggle Home app. I was able to install our camera and thermostat, but not our smoke/co detectors. When I try to install the smoke/co detectors I get a message that they need to be installed on the Nest app!  This is crazy! Does this mean I need to use two apps to run our Nest devices?

@LEH

Unfortunately, yes. I'm just another Google Nest customer who has been using 2 apps since Sept. 2021 when we bought a Google Nest Camera (Battery).

Google Nest is working to get past their current 2-app solution.

They are working on an updated version of the Google Home app and as of yesterday it is open to preview by invitation (see link below).  (We haven't seen it yet.)  Unfortunately, while they are working to bring Nest app functions into the Google Home app for older Nest cameras, the Nest Protect won't move to the Google Home app.

And this new Help page on the preview, which says "The re-designed Google Home app does not support a number of older devices (ex: Nest Protect) from the Nest App.":

Thanks for checking back with me. I returned the Nest doorbell and bought a Ring doorbell. Problem solved.

I will keep my “legacy” devices (thermostat, smoke/co detectors, camera) and continue to use them on the Nest app. I am very happy with that app and the devices. I think the the Google Home app is terrible and the incompatibility with some of the older devices is ridiculous.
