Can't screw in Nest Protects into wall or ceiling

MissLiz
Community Member

Hi,

Stupid question... can someone give me some advice on how to actually screw in a Nest Protect?

I can't even begin to screw them in,  either into a wall, or a ceiling

The instructions say:

The Nest screws are self-tapping, so there's no need to drill pilot holes in wood, plaster and other relatively soft materials.

But there's nothing in the instructions about what to do if you can't do that.

I guess both  my ceilings and walls are just too hard, or I just don't have the strength to do it 🙂

So how do I actually proceed?

Thanks for any help.

Liz

You probably need to drill some pilot holes if the ceiling is too hard for the included self-tapping screws. That's what I would do.

Hi Jennifer

I had problems replying... kept getting an error about an invalid ticket or something

Sorry for not replying sooner, but I didn't see the notification of any replies, because e-mail notifications are being sent to my Google account e-mail (which I don't use), instead of my own personal e-mail.
Thanks for everyone's help, but I decided not to screw in my Nest Protects at all  😁
I'm not into DIY, and I bought the Nest Protects because I thought it would be dead easy to screw in as per the instructions. There wasn't anything in the instructions that indicated I might need to purchase a drill, before I'd be able to  screw it in!

Anyway, the biggest problem I have now, is that I find this forum unusable, because I can't don't get to see any e-mail notifications when there are replies.  It was only by chance that I happened to see your last message.
The problem with this forum is that it seems to be too integrated with a Google account.
I have to log in here using my Google account, and even though I have
Recovery e-mail / contact e-mail / alternate e-mail / about me e-mail
all set to my personal (non Google) e-mail address in my google account settings , this forum always sends e-mail notification to my gmail e-mail address only, which I don't monitor.  I don't want e-mails to be sent to my gmail address under any circumstances.
Also, there don't appear to be any options to set your preferred email address in this forum's settings either.
The only options in Personal -> Email -> Email settings is an option to disable community emails, no option to set your preferred email.

It seems to me that unless you allow people to log in here with a non-google account, then there's no way to fix this.
Having said that, I would have thought that setting contact email in the google account settings to my personal email address should have worked... but it does not.
If you can think of an answer to that one, that would be most helpful. I'll manually check my gmail account for the net few days, in case I get a reply.
Thanks for your help

It appears there's no answer to this.

I can't use the  (non-google) e-mail address of my choice.

Not very good that, is it.

Hi MissLiz,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. If you need any more help from this, do let us know so that we can look into it more thoroughly.

Thanks,

Hi @Jhonleanmel

Thanks for your reply, but you're missing the point.

When you create an account here, you have to use a gmail account. I want to log in using my own personal  (non-google) e-mail account, but there is no way.

That being the case, notifications just go to the gmail email address.

This is not what I want. I want to be able to receive notifications to my own non-google email address, but there appears to be no way at all to do this.

That is complete madness in my opinion.

Not everyone wants to use a gmail email address.

There needs to be a way of setting the notification e-mail address independently of the log in email (which has to be gmail) in the site settings here.

Hi MissLiz,

Thanks for clarifying. We understand that you preferred to use your own personal non-Google account in receiving notifications to a thread.

In addition to what Mel said, receiving notifications for a linked non-Google account to your Gmail account associated with the Google Nest Community Forum is yet to be available. Have a look at this article. You can find more settings to enable for your Google Nest Community account.

Let us know if you need more help.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi MissLiz,

I'm checking back in. Were you able to check the link above? I'd be glad to hear from you.

Best regards,

Mark

Yes, I looked at the link, and I could see nothing there that would help me, or was relevant to my problem.

it’s weird, actually, because in my Google account settings (not nest community settings) there’s a setting for “Contact email’ which I have set to my non-Google email address. When Google send me information about my Google account, then they get sent to my non-Google email address. I don’t understand why this site doesn’t behave the same way, as it’s so tightly integrated with Google.

I’ll just have to live with the fact that it doesn’t work until you fix the problem. It’s frustrating as I’ve never seen a problem like this with any other web site, ever.

Thanks

Liz
