First Time Protect User - Bought 3, only first one connects to network.

Same issue Alon posted a few weeks ago.   I bought 3 Protects.  First one connected to the network with relative ease.  After that,  nothing.  "Something went wrong" This device (location) can't be set up. Factory reset this device by holding..... "  I saw a youtube where a guy pulled the batteries from the initial unit because the subsequent units tried linking to IT rather than the network.  I may explore that again. All the traditional troubleshooting doesn't work.  I had all 3 lined up next to the router. each other. pulled batteries,  I reset my phone, the router, tried settings.  Still same error message. I guess having 1 networked may suffice.  Would be nice to have all 3 though.

I have 3 nest protect and they are working fine on a single network.

The trick is to follow the steps very carefully.

Like Reset the nest protect, restart the phone scan the QR code and enter the password correctly.

Thanks for letting me know its poosible. I do follow the instructions but I vary between manually entering the 6 letter ID code and scanning the QR code to entertain myself in between failed setups. After 30 fails, I go do something else.

If I were you I will

1. Reset the Nest Proct - Press it till you hear version number release.

2. Restart you phone

3. Goto nest app and "Add product"

4. Scan the QR code

5. Enter the wifi password

Thanks, I will give it a try. Nothing to lose at this point. I also saw a vidro that says to do a factory reset, you hold the button for TWENTY seconds. Instructions only said ten. I may try that as well.

So the 20 second reset made progress. Rather than an immediate error, it actually searches for the network now, lets me put in my password, does the set up. Now in the finishing up stage it spins for a bit but then gives me a P009.08 error code.  Restarted both phone and protect, same error. but making progress! Thanks!

I just got off the phone with my internet provider tech support.  They said to go into the router app, click on Internet,  then Advanced Settings, then switch the Self Organizing Network OFF during install. Then place all 3 units beside each other after a hard 20 second reset, and install per instructions.  I'm going to attempt this next.

We lost power so I had to wait but I just tried again. I lined up all 3 units right next to the router. Second unit would not connect. Same error code P009 0.80. Tried 3rd unit, same error. I deletes 1st u it off the netword and tried 2nd unit. same error. re connected the first unit. it added first try. second and third units, nothing.

Did you find a solution?

Not yet. The only other thing I can think of to try is disable the first unit, then try to connect the 2nd or 3rd unit FIRST to see if they wont connect at ALL, or just dont like being second and third in line.

Make sure your WiFi is 2.4 GHz and IPv6.

Thanks. I did try adding with the 2.4 ghz network both enabled and disabled. The IPv6 was enabled both times. Keep getting a P009 (0.80) error code after the "finishing up" phase of the install. Only the first unit connects successfuly

***Possible Solution***

I purchased 2 units. 1 worked, 2nd one had the error code. Tried dozens of things but none worked. I requested a return from Amazon where I purchased them from. A replacement unit just arrived and works perfect. Synced to the other unit and they're now working 100%. I believe there is a firmware glitch hidden in some units. A bad batch, apparently. If you can, ship your unit back for an exchange or refund and hope you get a proper unit.

I totally think it is related to the firmware.  The latest version won't let older versions attach, and you can't upgrade them. The old version can let ones with newer firmware attach.

I definitely think they have a bad batch. I recommend everyone reaching out to them and asking for a warranty or something. I just happened to have caught a good one. Although there's nothing stopping them from pushing a firmware update that bricks everyone's working units

That could be the case, but all of these are the same (gen 2). Maybe gen 2s dont like other gen 2s. My last ditch effort is to remove/reset the one that worked and try connecting one of the other two first. I just dont have much time to mess with smoke detectors. For now, they are all wired up and detecting smoke, but it would be nice getting the other 2 on the wi fi.

I will try that. Just told Amazon I want to exchange the 2 non connecting units. They are shipping 2 new ones out in 2 days. I have a few weeks to return the 2 I've got to a local store that does amazon exchanges. Thanks for the tip!

I exchanged the two non connecting units on amazon. The replacements are being delivered today. I will try to add those to the wi fi and see if either or both work. I have another 3 weeks to return the existing units to a store that handles amazon returns. Will update after attempting to add the replacement units.

Hi there,

I appreciate the steps you've taken. Here's an article you can follow in setting up your replacement smoke alarms in the Nest app. Also, Move all devices being used for pairing closer to the router.

Keep us posted. We're happy to help.

Regards,

Zoe

PROBLEM SOLVED!! ok, JohnwGallagher is correct. The first unit that WAS connecting has firmware 3.5.0.3. The other non connecting units both had 3.4.0.6. So I disconnected the 3.5.0.3 and did a hard 20 second reset (write down the firmware versions each has as its spoken out during the 20 second hard reset!!!) and line them up next to the router with blue circles aglow and connect the LOWEST firmware version FIRST! then work your way up. All 3 units connected like clockwork! The replacement units havent even arrived yet. Will return them as is.  Might want to add this to your instructions Google!! Thanks everyone!!

Hello larz28,

That's good to hear! On the other hand, I'll go ahead and lock this thread after 24 hours. Please feel free to start a new thread if you have any questions in the future.

This is the answer!  I had bought Nine units for my house.  Eight of them are version 3.4.0.3 and one of them is version 3.5.0.3.  Because of my incredible luck, the first one I set up was the newer firmware version.  I created my own thread looking for answers.  No luck.  Until now.

The solution: set up each of the older ones before setting up the newest one.  Just set up all nine with no hiccups or errors.

Thank you so much!
