I have a response to a Google ticket that confirms that Nest Protect will not work in Google Home. Yet they claim it will be added "in the future."
They did manage to skip answering why they still advertise works with google, why they still sell in Scotland, etc.

I apologize if you're unable to add the Nest Protects to Google Home app. As of now we don't have a way of making it happen as the Nest Protect is not yet integrated with the Google Home app. Though it's not possible now, the plan is having all Nest products work with Google Home App in the future.
