Nest Protect Smoke CO Detector and Notifications

RetLEO

How do I get the Nest Protect app to text or audibly alert me of smoke or fire when away from my home?  The app is very vague on notifications and choices.  Thanks!

Hi RetLEO,

Thanks for posting here in the community. I understand your concern about the alerts and notifications of your Nest Protect. However, because they're a matter of safety, Nest Protect notifications about smoke, carbon monoxide, low batteries, offline status, expiration, and sensor failure, can't be turned off with the Nest app. So you won't see options for these notifications in the Protect settings menu. Hit this link to know more about this. Let us know if you have more questions in mind.

Thanks,
Emerson

Thanks Ebedia.  Do you know what kind of notification I will receive for smoke/fire/CO on my iPhone?  Will it be push notifications, texts, email, or just within the app only?  Also, do notifications change when your location is at home versus away?  I would never want to disable emergency notifications, but I would like the options of having texts as they are more recognizable than push notifications or in app notifications.  Thanks!

Hello there,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for helping here, Emerson.

@RetLEO, you can get an alert on your phone or tablet (as long as the Nest Protect has a Wi-Fi connection). The alerts are saved in the Nest app in Messages, via Push Notification, and via email. Also, we prioritize your safety at home, so it is not possible to turn off Nest Protect notifications. Here's an article that will explain all the alerts and sounds you will receive and let us know if you have more questions.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for all the assistance.  Just 1 more question.  I was at home when my wife blew out a candle and the Nest detector above sounded a smoke detected alarm.  I never received a push, email, or other overt alert on my phone.  I checked the device messages/log and saw no alarm.  Yet, a message that smoke was detected did show up a short time later.  At the time, I didn’t have the Home/Away assist activated.  My question is whether or not being Home or Away changes the type of alert received?  Maybe I didn’t have a push or email because my app was set for Home?  Thanks again!

Hi RetLEO,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. Regardless if the Nest app status is "away" or "home," You should receive an alert when the Nest Protect detects any smoke, etc. Please make sure that your Nest Protect is connected to Wi-Fi and not in offline status. Also, it would be better to refresh it by taking out its batteries for at least 3 minutes, then plugging them back in to refresh.

Feel free to let us know if you have more questions in mind.

Best regards,

Mark
