Nest Protect started chirping at 1:00 AM as if it had low batteries. One of the Energizer lithium batteries was so hot it couldn't be touched! A couple of others were extremely warm. There was a slight burning smell.
There was no alert of any kind that batteries were low.
If I hadn't been home at the time, would Nest Protect have burned the house down? This is very disturbing, can it be trusted?

You aren't the first person to report this issue on these forums. I don't recall a fix being mentioned though, or an acknowledgement of this as a known issue.
I think our best bet as a customer base is to make these problems known outside Google, so a trend can be established. Could you please take a moment to report this issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission at: https://www.saferproducts.gov/IncidentReporting
