Nest protect alerts but then does not sound full alarm

Hello

I’ve a bunch of nest protects which all claim to work and all pass the check up tests.

however when we recently had smoke in the kitchen from a grill fire, the alarm said it was going to sound but then didn’t. We just had a yellow ring on the nearest detector which we had to presss to clear.  Is this expected? I was expecting a full alarm to sound.

many thanks

Hiya!

The nest protect is designed to determine different types of fire and knows difference between steam and smoke to reduce false alarms. Typically, the nest protect will issue a warning/pre-alarm such as 'Possible Smoke in Kitchen', and if a full fire is noticed then it will say 'Heads up their smoke, sounding the alarm' which then should trigger an alarm if the sensors inside detect it's a fire.  If the app is showing you the detector is fine, it should be working. But if you feel as it isn't working then you could try two things:

  1. Do a Manual Test of the Nest Protect, by pressing the base of the detector and following the instructions it says. It should say 'Press to test' then you press it again and it will do a full check, which includes a sounding of the alarm and carbon monoxide alarm.
  2. Try setting the nest protect off yourself, if you have a can of fake smoke or something like a lighter gently spray or get smoke to enter the detector (if using a lighter ensure you are not too close to the detector to avoid melting the plastic/housing for the detector) in order to set it off, this may also help identify and possible sounder issues

Let us know how you get on,

If the level of smoke should have warranted a full alarm, instead of a heads up there's smoke, report this issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission as failure to alarm is a commonly reported issue that Google has failed to address or acknowledge internally. https://www.saferproducts.gov/IncidentReporting
