Nest protect

Help! I had painting done and my nest protect went off saying smoke was detected. I pushed the button but now it’s yellow flashing and every 5 minutes it’s announced that smoke has been detected. How do I get the green light back?

Hi Crred96,

Thanks for reaching out. If Google Nest Protect sounds a smoke alarm when there's no smoke, or if it chirps and your Nest app says that there’s a sensor failure, it means that it needs your attention. In some cases, this occurs because dust got into the smoke chamber or steam has set it off. Cleaning your Nest Protect or moving it away from sources of steam might help.

Clean your Nest Protect

  • All photoelectric smoke alarms can be impacted by dust. So, it’s important to keep your Nest Protect free of dust and clean it if dust is building up.
  • Nest Protect constantly monitors its sensors to ensure that they’re working properly. If dust interferes with the smoke sensor, it can let you know. But, it’s still important to keep your Nest Protect clean and working properly.

Move Nest Protect away from sources of steam

  • Steam can also trigger false alarms in many smoke alarms. Common household sources of steam include showers and humidifiers. So if you’ve experienced a false alarm and your Nest Protect is placed near a source of steam, this may be the cause.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Jenelyn

Hi thanks for answering. My nest protect will not reset. It stays yellow and is still giving me the voice message of smoke on the hallway. It is wired so I can’t take it down to clean it.  Isn’t there a w ay to reset it?

Hi there,

I'm sorry for the delayed response. If your Nest Protect device is not resetting and remains in a yellow state, indicating a potential issue, there are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Since your Nest Protect is wired, ensure that it has a stable power source. Verify that the electrical connections are secure and there are no loose or damaged wires. If there is any uncertainty about the power source, you may need to consult a professional electrician.
  2. If your Nest Protect is giving you a voice message about smoke in the hallway, it's important to verify if there is any actual smoke or fire present. Check the area around the device for any signs of smoke or fire. If there is no smoke or fire, and the device continues to report a smoke alarm, it could indicate a malfunction.
  3. If the device is unresponsive and not resetting through the usual reset process, you can try a hard reset. To perform a hard reset, press and hold the Nest button on the device for about 20 seconds until the LED pulses blue. This should force a complete reset of the device. After the hard reset, follow the setup instructions provided by Nest to reconnect the device to your network.

Thanks,

Zoe
