Nest smoke alarms not meeting Australia legislation

Hello,

The Google nest smoke alarms don't meet the Australian standards AS3786-2014 for "non removable batteries" in their battery operated only versions. Is there an exception coming in Australia like there is overseas for the non-wired versions or is google looking to create a smoke alarm with a non-removable battery? Looking to upgrade to interconnected alarms. Thanks!

Hi @Tash3000,

You're right, currently Google Nest Protect (battery-operated only versions) don't meet the Australian standard AS3786-2014 for non-removable batteries. Here's what we know:

  • Australian Standards: As of now, there aren't any exceptions for non-removable batteries in smoke alarms specifically designed for Australian homes.
  • Google's Plans: There's no official information about Google creating a smoke alarm with a non-removable battery specifically for the Australian market.

Here are some options for you:

  • Wired Nest Protect: Consider the wired version of Google Nest Protect. These models are compliant with Australian standards (AS 3786:2014) and have tamper-proof, long-lasting sealed batteries.

  • Alternative Brands: Explore other smoke alarm brands that offer interconnected models compliant with AS 3786-2014 and have non-removable batteries.

Regards,

Mario.
