Trying to add wired Protect to existing network (google mesh ) but keep getting P017(0.65) error

Trying to add a new wired Nest Protect to my existing network--which is using Google mesh WIFI.  Have tried everything I know but keep ending up with connectivity error P017 (0.65).  I have numerous Nest devices running inculding thermostats, door bell, cameras, and 2 other Protect units. Aware of 2.4ghz issues using Google mesh wifi and have tried both distance trick from router, as well as setting up phone hotspot (max. compatibility selected) with same network name and p/w to try and force connection using 2.4ghz--but so far no success. If i look at my existing Protect devised they show connected at 2.4 ghz but cannot seem to get the new one to connect.

Any other ideas.

Hi @501,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear you're running into a P017 (0.65) connectivity error trying to add a new wired Nest Protect to your existing Wi-Fi network. I understand that this could be frustrating, especially when you already have several Nest devices, including other Protects working well, and you've already tried common troubleshooting steps. I'm here to help.

The P017 error often indicates a problem with the Nest Protect connecting to your Wi-Fi network. Let's focus on key steps that can help resolve this specific issue, especially for a new wired unit.

Key Steps to Connect Your Nest Protect

1. Confirm Nest Protect's Light Ring

  • During the pairing process, the light ring on your Nest Protect should be glowing blue. This indicates it's awake and ready to connect.
  • If it's not glowing blue, the Nest app should prompt you to wake it up. Do not press the Nest button to wake it up until the Nest app specifically tells you to.

2. Position Nest Protects Closer Together

  • Wireless interference can sometimes prevent Nest Protects from connecting to your Wi-Fi or to each other.
  • Place your new Nest Protect no more than a couple of feet away from an existing Nest Protect that is already connected to your Nest app.
  • This helps them communicate and share Wi-Fi information during setup. If your new Protect is already installed on the ceiling or wall, temporarily remove it for this step.

3. Move Nest Protects Closer to Your Wi-Fi Router

  • Other electronics using the 2.4 GHz frequency (like cordless phones, microwaves, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors, or wireless video equipment) can cause interference.
  • Try moving your Nest Protects and the phone you're using for setup closer to your main Google Nest Wifi router.
  • This helps ensure a stronger signal during the critical setup phase. You can also try temporarily turning off some of these other electronics to reduce potential interference during the setup process.

4. Reset and Restart for a Fresh Start

If you've attempted to pair your Nest Protect multiple times without success, you can clear the memory for both the Protect and the app by following these steps, which will provide a fresh start for setup:

  • On the Nest Protect: Press the Nest button 3 times, or until it verbally confirms "Cancelled." The light will then turn off.
  • On your mobile device:
  • Quit and restart the Nest app completely.
  • If that doesn't work, restart your entire phone or tablet and then open the Nest app to begin the Protect setup again.

Please try these steps carefully, and let me know the results. Your feedback will help us figure out the next best steps to get your new Nest Protect connected!

Regards,

Kevin

Done all of this already, and unfortunately doesn't seem to make any difference. Same error keeps coming up: P017 (0.65)

Hi @501,

Thank you for your response. Let's work together for a solution.

Please follow these steps carefully:

  1. Press and hold your Nest Protect’s button.

  • It will chime, and its light ring will begin to glow blue.
  • Continue holding the button down even after it glows blue.
  1. Release the button when your Protect starts to say its version number.
  2. Your Protect will then begin a verbal countdown and tell you that it’s "erasing all your settings."
  • To cancel the factory reset at this point, simply press the Protect button again during the countdown.
  1. After a few seconds, your Protect will reset to its factory default settings.

Once the factory reset is complete, you can then proceed with the setup process again through the Nest app or Google Home app to add it back to your account.

Please let me know if you have any questions or how this process goes!

Regards,

Kevin
