Upgraded to Nest Wifi and Nest Protect will not connect

solarweasel

I recently upgraded my older Google Wifi router to the Nest Wifi router and changed the Wifi network name.

Little did I know, but doing this rendered all of my Nest Protect alarms unable to connect. Nest Wifi broadcasts 2.4ghz and 5ghz Wifi under the same network name, and the Protects (which can only connect to 2.4ghz) are unable to distinguish. They try to connect to 5ghz and fail every time.

How on earth do I work around this issue? And why can't Google roll out a simple update to rectify this? Two Nest products should be compatible, and I shouldn't even be having to ask for a workaround.

Hello everyone,

@solarweasel and @ChrisG1 thanks for reaching out and sharing what you've done. If updating the Wifi connection through the Nest App failed, then you need to follow these steps:

  • Gather all of them and place them near your Wifi router.
  • Remove them from your Nest App.
  • Reset all of them to factory default and re-add to the Nest App.
  • Note: During setup they should have blue light pulsing, indicating that they're ready to be set up.

Keep us posted.

Regards,
Emerson

I just went through all mine after I upgraded to Nest WiFi Pro. Two out of my three Protects show on the network in the Home app. Incidentally, those two are hardwired to power. It's my battery one that shows offline. However, in the Nest app all three show green and test properly. If you have something similar I would not be concerned.

Once I couldn't get the Nest Protects to "update WiFi network" through the Nest app, I (perhaps stupidly) removed all of them with intentions of re-adding them to see if that would work. That's when I realized they can't connect to a 5GHz network. So unfortunately I must now somehow re-add the devices in Nest app.

Thanks @EmersonB ; this did the trick.

Also worth mentioning (because perhaps I'm not the only one who made this mistake) is that when resetting the Protect, you need to hold the button down continuously and release it immediately after the version number is read off. Otherwise it will not properly reset.
