1 thermostat controlling multiple heat links

djniviro

Hi everyone,

Since the add of 5 Google Nest Thermostats (gen.3) in our house, I'm running in quite some issues. Some thermostats won't connect wirelessly and function thus only over wires (probably because a too large distance? Or do they connect with the Heat Link over WiFi?), which I of course prefer. But some thermostats ALSO show a wireless connection which is impossible to turn off. These wireless connections are mostly linked with the wrong Heat Link and I cannot seem to find a solution to link it with the right one.

For example: the thermostat of the bathroom controls the Heat Link of the bathroom over the wired connection, but ALSO the Heat Link of the sauna room, even though the sauna room has its own wired thermostat connected.

At the end, I have 0 control over which zone gets heated and I have no clue how to solve this, rather than going back to the old (dumb) thermostats.

Any help is more than welcome! Thanks!

Best, Tim

Thanks for reaching out to us @djniviro . I am sorry to hear you are facing difficulties with your setup. I would be happy to try and assist.

First, just to check, was the system installed and set up by a Nest Pro installer or by a regular installer/electrician?

Hi Alex, I did this myself, but having quite some electrical knowledge, it shouldn't be wrong there.

Each of the Heat Links are connected to a Tempolec MZ 003 (of which are 3 in the system). So basically each Google Nest Thermostat has its own dedicated connection to a pump. The main issue is the connectivity. All thermostats are connected by wire to each corresponding Heat Link, but, of course, have WiFi connection too and that's where I think things go wrong.

I tried resetting them completely and installing them one by one having all other Heat Links disconnected so it only could match one Heat Link (in theory). However some thermostats mentioned a wireless connection is not able to be created. I assume because they're rather far away from the Heat Link. Via which protocol does the Heat Link and thermostat talk wirelessly?

Anyway, the problem of having one Thermostat talking by wire to its corresponding Heat Link does work, but the wireless connection does go to the wrong Heat Link, heating 2 zones with only one thermostat.

Thanks for letting us know @djniviro.

The thermostat and the Heat Link communicate via the Nest Weave protocol, which is a bilateral unique connection between 2 devices only. It is not recommended to try to connect more thermostats to a single Heat Link as they won't be able to do that no matter how much it's tried. You could try to connect them wirelessly, but they'll be more vulnerable to interference, and from your explanation there's a lot of interference in the area either from large metal objects, coaxial cables in the wall, mirrors, microwaves, etc... The safest way is to hardwire them to the corresponding Heat Link.

I think you might have understood me wrong. Every thermostat is hardwired with their corresponding Heat Links (thus 5 heat links in total). The issue is the wireless communication which connects with the wrong heat link. Basically what I need is the option to turn of the wireless connection or a manual override where I can enter the correct Heat Link’s ID.

If the wireless connection fails, you can introduce manually each Heat Link's pairing code into each thermostats. Here are the steps for that:

1. Gather the 6-digit entry key located on the bottom side of Heat Link's case, near the screw that holds the case together.
2. Select the option "Replace Heat Link" on the thermostat (you will have a message saying that the thermostat failed to connect wirelessly to the heat link, you just need to continue and you will receive a screen with 4 options: check again, reset pairing, replace heat link and technical info, the correct option in the third)
3. Put the 6-digit entry key in there but don't confirm it. Just write it there and stop when you see the word "Connect" highlighted.
4. Press the "Nest" button on the Heat link and hold it for 45 seconds until you see a slowly pulsating blue light on the Heat Link. After that, wait about 5 seconds and press and hold it again for another 45 seconds until you see a slowly pulsating blue light on it.
5. Go ahead and press connect on the Thermostat's display and wait about a minute. You shall see the message "Heat link connected wirelessly" and the Heat Link's light shall be solid green. That means the devices are connected and working.

Hi DragosC, thank you for your comment, I will definitely try this in a bit. However, future support of just turning the wireless connection off would of course be appreciated.

But I have to say, it's mainly the ones who did connect wirelessly which are the issue. But I'll be checking out the replace heat link on those as well!

It might sound like a stupid question, but where exactly can the heat link pairing code be found on the Heat Link itself?

@djniviro, it's worth trying though. Most of the time the steps above really help and sort out the issue.

You can easily find the Heat Link entry key, on it, underneath next to the tiny screw. Let me know if you manage to find it.

Hi @djniviro. Just checking in, did you manage to try the steps mentioned by my colleague?

Hey apologies for staying silent. It has been quite hectic here. It now all works flawlessly (so far). Thanks for the great support!
