3rd Gen Thermostat Nest App vs Home App Features issues

Hello all,

I have had the 3rd Gen Learning Thermostat for a little while now, I’ve had no real issues. However, a recent addition to my home (Black Friday Spesh) was one of the Nest Hub Display’s - and thats where I start seeing the really big problem between having the Nest app and Home App.

Due to various people coming and going in my house (baby sitter, cleaner etc) I was going to show them how to control the house using the Nest Hub Display… I have lights, blinds, garage door openers, you name it - fantastically everything can be controlled with the display. When I had finished setting up the display I decided to test it out - turning a few lights on and off etc. No issues. Then I adjusted the 3rd Gen thermostat to 22DegC… This is 4 Degree’s above the “locked” temperature i have set in the Nest app. The thermostat happily obliged and started increasing the temperature to 22DegC. Not good.

I initially thought this was a bug with the display but I then went to my phone/ipad and did the same thing from the home app - same result. So… You can circumvent the “Lock” you have enabled on the thermostat in the Nest App with the home app or anything connected to the home app (Hub Display) and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it because this “lock” feature has not yet been brought across to the Home App.

I would very much like to be corrected here by an expert but sadly I was on the phone to Google for 1 hour and they eventually said “i think its because this feature isn’t brought across from the Nest app to the Home app yet”.

However, do not despair, I found “hack” using the “SmartThings” app by Samsung. By the way Google, if you’re reading this - please go and do some reconnaissance inside the SmartThings app to see how smart home things should really be done. I can do more things with your thermostat inside the SmartThings app than with the Home App which is truly embarrassing. Anyway, apologies for the tangent… Inside the SmartThings app you can pair Nest devices and select these devices and create rules and/or IF commands (totally amazing). So I created a rule which reads;

IF > Thermostat Set to Heating ABOVE or Equal to 19DegC for 10seconds

THEN > Turn thermostat to 18DegC

AND > Notify me or other family members.

If anyone can tell me if they know the timescale for all these features to be brought across to the Home app because its starting to be quite annoying that I’ve had to devise such a ridiculous work-around.

Best regards!

Jamie

Hi jayhiggins,

We appreciate your interest however; we don't have any news to share about creating a rule for your Nest Thermostat like on SmartThings. We're always looking for ways to improve and we'll take it as feedback.

I also suggest that you send feedback by following this link. Let me know if you have other questions or concerns, otherwise I’ll be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Best,

Mel
