3rd generation Nest Thermostat

I am installing a 3rd generation Nest thermostat in a different location to the existing wired thermostat. If I use the USB port for power, will it still signal to the heat link over the wifi?

Thank you for your question @brian999 . The short answer is yes, it will still have signal to the Heat Link. However, do keep in mind that like all wireless devices there is a limit to the range. Also keep in mind that this range can be limited by different factors such as wall thickness, other appliances, pipes, mirrors and other objects that cause interference.

It is best to pair the thermostat right next to the Heat Link, on USB power and then move it to the desired location to see if the signal reaches there. If not you can play with the location until you find one that the signal reaches and also measures a temperature you want.

Thanks AlexD, that is absolutely brilliant. Wifi is perfect here so I don't think we will have a problem there, and I also liked your suggestion of pairing it while its next to the heat link.

Hey @brian999,

That's great, however keep in mind that the communication between the Heat Link and thermostat is done via Weave, it is wireless, but it's not through Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi helps the thermostat communicate with the Nest app on your phone. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
