3rdGeneration Nest Thermostat: Batt Low all the time

Ashworth
Community Member

Hallo

I have had 3rd generation Nest for > 4 years until last year it started losing connection with WIFI then I later discovered that it needed a Nest Power Connector (Dont have C wire). I installed it, and it worked great until last week. It started showing symptom before I installed a power connector (no wifi connection because low battery).

This is what I have done in the past 24 hrs:

I replaced the battery (purchased from Amazon) and removed the old battery, but the problem is still there.

Any suggestions?

THANKS

BTW: Are these statement correct?

The battery in Nest 3rd generation thermostats only serves as a backup, if you have POWER CONNECTOR then battery is not needed to be functional. Correct?

If the POWER CONNECTOR is installed, the unit is connected at the base, it doesn't mean itis charging the battery. Correct?

@Ashworth

The batteries that you can get online are not the correct battery for the Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd Gen, and will cause a problem in the long run.

Having a C wire installed means the thermostat has constant power applied to it, which keeps the battery fully charged.

Look at the Power reading on the Technical Info page in the thermostat. This article will show you how to find the information and its levels. Go to the On your thermostat section.

Thanks for the response. I will take your advice for not using a 3rd party battery.

I dont have a C wire but instead I used Nest Power Connector to provide power to the device. It worked for 1 year+ until recently. My lin never reached 100mA or 200mA when the device is on the base with power connector is on.  Is it possible that the power connector not providing power to the device?

I checked it, and no sign of damaged or loose wires since those things dont usually get moved.

Thanks again.

Hi folks,

@Ashworth, thanks for posting here in the Community forum, and I'm sorry to hear about the situation.

A Nest Power Connector is not really recommended for a Nest Learning Thermostat, but a C-wire is. A few questions: Are the power breakers on, and do you receive power to your home? Is the thermostat's display seated properly? Are all the wires of your thermostat seated firmly in its terminals (with no loose or exposed wires)? Also, since you don't have a C-wire, have you ever charged the thermostat display with a micro-USB cable? Lastly, please help me with your Nest Learning Thermostat's complete power reading.

  1. To open the Quick View menu, press the thermostat’s ring.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Turn the ring to highlight Technical Info then press the ring to select it.
  4. Select Power.
