Battery won't hold the charge

Halbrand
Community Member

I just installed a Nest thermostat gen 3. It won't turn on. Just hooked up with W1, Rh, Y1,and G wires. I checked the breaker and it's on and rewired to test and making sure that they're seated properly.

Any advice would help. Thanks.

That nest third generation thermostat you have does have the ability to use either of the Y wire or the W wire to reach the common side of the power transformer and charge the battery. However, this takes time and what you need to do is get there faster. What you need to do is take the nest display off the thermostat base, flip it over you’ll see a USB, charging port, plug it into a USB charger for several hours. Then reinstall the display onto the back plate. The best way to ensure you have a good current to charge the battery of a Nest third generation, is use a Power Common wire. There is a small percentage of systems that have digital control boards that will not allow this back door feeding for the power common to charge the battery.
