C Wire Error

Kminga1

Hi,

My cooling system has been working fine and suddenly I am getting an error message (N261). Is this a true HVAC system error that needs an HVAC tech or is there a communication error with the Nest thermostat itself that can be fixed? Thanks

Hey Kminga1,

Thanks for reaching out and sorry to hear about your Nest thermostat. I want to dig deeper into this.

A few questions — what specific Nest thermostat do you have? How is it wired? Does it have a C wire?

N261 means either one of the  following reasons below:

  • The C wire isn’t providing enough power to your thermostat.
  • Your thermostat might need a C wire or the Nest Power Connector to provide it with dedicated power.
  • If you're installing the Nest Power Connector and you get an E297 help code, your thermostat needs an update. On the thermostat screen, select Settings > Software > Update.
  • If you have already installed the Nest Power Connector, you might need to update the wiring info in the app.
