There is no workaround for this, unfortunately. I guess this stresses the importance of keeping your recovery information up to date. The quickest way to resolve so you can get back to using your thermostat is to follow these steps:

  1. On the thermostat go to Settings > Reset > Account connection. If you don't see that option, select All Settings, which will factory reset your thermostat.
  2. Login to the Nest app with a Google account.
  3. On the Nest app home screen, tap the Settings cog.
  4. Tap Add product. The app will switch to a camera view to scan the thermostat’s QR code.
  5. On the thermostat, press it to open the quick view menu and tap the Settings cog.
  6. Turn the ring to select Nest app and press to open it.
  7. Select QR code. Your thermostat will show you a unique QR code to scan with the app. If it doesn't, tap Continue without scanning in the app and select Get entry key on your thermostat instead.
  8. Follow the remaining steps in the Nest app.

So there is the problem - I can't sign into the app using google as it says

"

Your email is tied to a Nest account

Please sign in with your Nest password.

Want to start signing in with your Google Account? Migrate your Nest account to Google after signing in here."

And when I try to do that it wants to send a code to my old number again and round and round I go!

In that case, you’ll need to create a new Google account, or sign up for a Google account using a different email address unfortunately.
