Changing from wired to plugged in thermostat

I replaced my old thermostat and wired the Nest to the boiler, so it doesn’t need plugged in or an additional stand.

Unfortunately it seems the placing of the thermostat leads it to think it’s warmer than it really is. As a result the house is pretty cold, particularly if I’m cooking as that gets picked up by the Nest in its current position.

I was looking to buy a plug in stand for the Nest to use elsewhere in the house however I need to do something with the wired base.

Is it possible to get a blanking plate for the wall, e.g. that clips over the bracket, or do I need to remove the wiring and bracket? I’d prefer to leave it in place, just in case the plugged in one doesn’t help the problem I’m having.

Any help appreciated!

There is a blanking plug that fits inside the oblong wall plate, these can be found on ebay. You would have to make safe the 2 cores of the cable and remove the base, but that's easy, the main problem is if you can come to terms with looking at the oblong wall plate! I have in the past used a lid from a cosmentic pot that just fitted over the round base plate, and with a little imagination and cutting, you would not know it's a lid.

Make sure when locating a thermostat, no draughts, or over radiators or any heat source.

Thanks! I’ve currently not got an oblong plate fitted, so adding more isn’t overly appealing.

Strikes me as a bit odd there isn’t a product you can but to cover, but I might try a lid etc as you suggest.

If only they sold the additional sensors in the UK.

Hi there and many thanks for sharing your thoughts on this matter. Is there any chance to provide me a picture with your current thermostat location/setup, I might be able to recommend something if I have more details about the environment.

Hi, I don’t seem to be able to attach pictures of my actual setup here but it’s just the wired base attached to the wall as in this picture: https://images.app.goo.gl/QFB5D9nJz1DipmF46

I don’t currently have a backplate fitted, it’s just the nest mounted on the base.

Thank you for the example picture. The thermostat base needs to be removed from the wall when mounting it on a stand. Do keep in mind that this is not possible for the US mode base from the picture, the EU one only has T1 and T2 connections. The EU one can be mounted on a stand. You can learn more about the stand here

You will need to detach the wires from the base and remove the base from the wall. Once done you need to plug in a micro USB cable connected to a power adapter to the base and have it mounted on the stand. The stand, cable, and adapter are all included with the stand purchase from our store. If you are using your own adapter just make sure to use one that can deliver at least 5 VDC @ 5 Watts.

There is no separate wall plate we offer to cover up the hole if a thermostat is removed. While we don't have one you might be able to find one online or at your local hardware store as usually these are available to cover up holes that have electrical wires running through them that may need to be accessed at a later point.

Hi, I wanted to check in. Do you need any further assistance? If so, make sure to let me know.

Hi, thanks for the response. Ideally I would’ve left the base wired in and covered it, but appreciate that isn’t an option.

Thanks for the advice.

Happy I could help. I will go ahead and close down this thread then but if you have any other questions or anything else comes up, don't hesitate to open a new one.

I agree the backplate is pretty diar, but does get people out of problem with decor.

The funny thing about the sensors, the software is in your thermostat at present, good old Google just will not activate it for us in the UK. Why I have no idea, but someone needs to wake up at Google and let us have the same use as the USA.
