Changing the time on my Nest Learning Thermostat

Chris_K
Community Member

Hello,

My new Nest Learning Thermostat is set to PST while I am in CST.

Because this is connected to WiFi it automatically changes the time if I set it on the device.
All troubleshooting documentation states to go to Settings -> Home info -> Address but that options doesn't exist...  only Name, About & Home Wi-Fi help.
Even an older video of the device had a setting to change the timezone beneath time and that isn't there either.

Coincidentally, it is reporting the outside temperature correctly.

Where do I correct this?

Thank you

Hey Chris_K,

Thanks for keeping me in the loop. Have you tried performing a factory reset on your thermostat? This usually helps to recalibrate its settings to default. If you haven't yet, could you please give it a shot and let us know if that makes a difference?

Best,
Mark

Hi Chris_K,

Yikes! Let's sort this out.

Did you look for Settings > Home Info > Address on the thermostat or on the app? If your thermostat is connected to the Nest app and connected to Wi-Fi, it will use your location to gather local date, time, and weather information, so if your phone's location is incorrect, there is a high chance that your thermostat's timezone will also be inaccurate. Your location needs to be set correctly for your time to be adjusted automatically.

For your thermostat reading incorrect outside temperature, a few questions:

  • When was the thermostat installed?
  • Where did you install your thermostat? In a room and on a wall or stand?
  • Do you have other active Nest Thermostats? If yes, do they show the same?
  • When did this start?
  • How big is the difference between the readout of the Nest Thermostat and your thermometer or other thermostats?
  • Have you tried any troubleshooting steps? If yes, would you mind listing them?

Also, if you have a room thermometer, kindly take a photo of the thermometer next to the Nest Thermostat. Both the thermometer and thermostat screens should be visible in the photo and show the difference in each other’s readouts.

I'll look forward to your response.

Best,

Zoe

Thank you for the reply Zoe,

Did you look for Settings > Home Info > Address on the thermostat or on the app?
I have looked for this and that is the part that is confusing me.
The only options under Home Info are:
Name - Under this option, the only option is name.
About - Under this options, the physical properties of my home like square feet, year built, # of thermostats and type.
Home Wi-Fi help - Just a help file.

Yes, my Nest app is setup and connected.  The thermostat is connected to the wifi and I can view this all from both the Nest App & Google Home.

For your thermostat reading incorrect outside temperature, a few questions:
The outside temperature IS reading correctly.   I mentioned it because it seemed strange that the thermostat could read my location for the weather but not the timezone.

My thought was that there is possibly an android/privacy setting I have changed that is interfering and going to a default of PST in the absence of being able to get the correct timezone...  but I can't fathom where that would be (especially because the thermostat can read where I am located for the temperature).

Hello there,

I'm chiming in to seek more information here.

Thank you for helping, Zoe.

@Chris_K, thank you for that information. To sum up, please gather your thermostat's software version and try to tap and hold its screen or button for 10 seconds until it shuts down to refresh. Check the software version settings again to see if there's an available update. Also, can you confirm the Time Zone in the Technical Info settings?

Keep me posted.

Regards,
Mark

Hello Mark,

I double checked to ensure that I am the most current version (and I am).

As for the Time Zone I haven't been able to find it.

Under Technical I have Pwer, Nest Weave, Network, Sensors, Equipment, Display, Base as options.  I opened all of them and Timezone wasn't in any of them.

Even called my wife over to ensure the timezone didn't have the same magical properties as the bottle of ketchup in the fridge I couldn't find when asked... no luck.

This seemed to have worked.  Will keep you posted if things change.

Hello again,

Victory robbed.

I know now when the issue happens.  Time was correct for a couple of days but when I went to adjust the temperature via the Nest App it said the thermostat wasn't connected.  Internet was fine on the thermostat and Google home was reporting it correctly, just the Nest App.  So I then removed the existing device and created it again and it then reverted to PST instead of CST.

Any ideas rather than simply stop using the Nest App altogether and doing the factory reset again?

Hey there,

Yikes! Hit-and-miss. The Nest app is still your primary app for the Nest Learning Thermostat, and some of its settings can only be found there. Does it show offline in the app? How often do you notice it disconnected in the app?

Thanks,
Mark

Prior to the factory reset it was always connected.  It was only after the reset did it show offline.   Since I reconnected the Nest App to the thermostat it has been connected any time I check.

Hello Chris_K,

Got it. How's it going so far? Is it still going offline in the app? Let us know if you still need more help—we're always here.

Warm regards,
Mark

It is not going offline.  It only went offline after the factory reset and when I reconnected the time reverted to PST.

The Nest App (or in particular a setting in it) which is causing the issue.

Hi Chris_K,

Thanks for the update. To confirm, is your thermostat still showing a different time? What's the make and model of the phone you're using with the app? Also, check that the Nest app is up-to-date.

Best,
Mark

Yes, the thermostat is showing a different time.

The app is up to date.

The phone is a Samsung Galaxy S10+

Hello again,

Yikes! Have you tried creating a new home structure when you re-add your thermostat in the app? If you haven't yet, could you give it a try by doing another reset, but this time, instead of adding it to the same structure, create a new one with the updated home information?

Here's your guide on how to create and manage a home. I hope this step works.

Regards,
Mark

Hi there,

Sorry for the slow reply.  Got frustrated and then forgot about it (just moved everything by 2 hours to circumvent the problem).

In the home app I did manage to find the option to add my home address and it seemed to have adjusted everything without having to rebuilding my home.

Thank you for your assistance.
