Clicking noise

AngelaF

Hi. I moved into an apartment that’s a brand new place and they have a nest thermostat. It Always making clicking sounds when it’s running. Is this normal for nest? It works great otherwise. But I’ve never heard a noise like that from an hvac closet before.

Hello AngelaF,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. Let's sort this out.

A power issue, a system that may need professional maintenance, an issue with the changeover valve (for heat pumps), or an issue with the thermostat settings are some of the possible reasons why the system makes strange noises. To isolate:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • When did you start noticing the clicking noise?
  • What other strange symptoms have you experienced since the problem started?
  • Do you know if this is a new installation?
  • Do you notice any intervals or specific patterns between these strange behaviors?
  • Does the issue happen on heating only, cooling only, or both?
  • Please share with us a photo of your Nest Thermostat's wiring.
  • Gather the power readouts under the Technical Info settings.

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,
Mark

Hi I’m sorry. I’ve been out of town on work. I can get you an answer in 48-72 hours if we can keep this thread open.

Hi. Thanks for being patient. Ok so I’m back home but my husband is still gone for another week and he does all the tech type of stuff. But I can tell you the patterns, etc. so we moved in end of March to a brand new apartment. Just built. And it has a nest. It’s always been kind of loud but it started clicking shortly after we moved in. Either that or it took a while to fully notice. But it’s been seeming to click more and more as we’ve lived here. And it also makes noises like it’s freezing up. The hvac closet is locked and we can’t see it so I don’t have a way to even look at it. But it’s really weird because it seems to click mostly at night. Like as soon as it’s evening time and night time the thing just seems to go nuts with noises. Mostly clicking. And then sometimes the occasional freeze sound. We had been turning it on 69 but it was getting down to 68 so I went up to 70 and then it always try’s to cool past where I set it. So it was still trying to make freezing sounds at 70. So lately I’ve kept it on 71 and it’s been better about not doing the freeze sound but it’s still clicked like crazy. And now that I’m back it’s seeming to just sound like it’s louder in general. Like the fans louder maybe. It’s hard to place the sounds. But it doesn’t do hardly any of it during the day. Seems to get way worse once the Sun starts setting. The AC works fine. Cool great and fast. But now I’ve got it turned up to 73 because I’m afraid to let it run in fear it’s going to break before my husband gets back in town. Any advice and help would be super appreciated. I was able to look at settings on the nest settings and it says the following :

Vin: 31.750 V

lin: 385

PS: C-385

Hello there,

Got it. I appreciate the detailed information. Can you share with us a photo of your old thermostat's wiring and your Nest Thermostat's wiring? Also, to diagnose possible system maintenance issues, please try installing a different thermostat if you have one and testing your system. This method is useful to determine if there's a maintenance problem with the system or if the system doesn't provide enough power to the thermostat.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Mark

I’m in a brand new apartment complex and this came with it.

Hello AngelaF,

I see. When you moved in, was it already setup to control your system, or did you add it in the Google Home app? If so, can you check your thermostat's Wiring Info in the Equipment settings? Then, pull the thermostat display from its base and remove the batteries for at least 3 minutes to refresh.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark. Yes it was already set up. I had to add it to my app but the nest was connected already.  Y-C-W-G-R-*OB. I’ll do the battery reset again. I’ve already had to change the batteries once since we moved in.
