ECO, No Usage

  • We have a new Nest Learning thermostat and have set on established schedule.  We left for 7 day vacation and manually adjusted to 80 degrees before we left (assuming it would stay at 80 all week). I did not look at app until our drive home yesterday and saw Nest was on Eco and temp was 84 degrees.  Usage for the week showed “no activity” for each day.  Does this mean that the AC did not run all week?

In theory, if the history shows No Usage, it does mean that the AC didn't run.  However, some posters on this forum report that their history isn't accurate, and I've wondered about my Nest's sometimes, too.

You didn't ask for help with the other aspects of your vacation adventure (manually setting to 80 and finding the Nest was on Eco), but I will comment anyway.  You can ignore this if you already know all about it.  See https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9248184?hl=en&ref_topic=9361967#Learning-E for Google's basic instructions.

When you set the temperature to 80 manually, it's a "temporary hold".  The Nest obeys that command only until the next set point in its schedule, and then it reverts to the schedule.  For vacation you want a permanent hold.  Set an Eco temperature and then turn Eco Mode on.  During your drive home, turn Eco Mode off so the Nest will go back on the schedule and get the house cool for your arrival.

In addition to its programmable schedule, the Nest has a "smart" feature called Home/Away Assist or Presence Sensing.  If you have that turned on, it could explain why the Nest went into Eco mode and aimed at a temperature so high that the AC never had to turn on.  In Settings you can see and change your Nest's Eco temperature.  If you don't want the Nest to try to decide whether you're home or not, turn off Home/Away Assist and/or presence sensing.
