What I use:
w.Bosch Combi boiler
Nest Heat Link
Nest learning thermostat
Nest app on iOS
- While the config process is ultra clunky, esp if you have to setup Wi-Fi with a long random key, that’s not the worst. The WORST is misleading nest app menu options. After Wi-Fi set up, pair with the best link, the round thermostat walks you through a checklist of tasks.
After *pairing* the nest wireless thermostat with the nest heat link, (this uses some proprietary wireless link), the next step was to add the thermostat to the nest app. Here is where you select Add Device, and it allows you to scan the QR code printed on the back, recognises it and offers the possible thermostat types, pick the one that looks like yours.
Then the nest app asks you to choose,
“Setup installation, “
“Already Installed”
Now as it’s a NEW installation, the logical choice is setup installation*, right? WRONG. If you choose that, it will ask you to get the Entry Key, by selecting the Nest App on the thermostat. When you do this the thermostat will say “fetching Entry Key”. It then offers an ALPHA NUMERIC Key, not seven numbers as the app suggests. When you key this 7 character key made of 3 numbers and 4 letters, the phone app will say “Check Key and try again” No matter how many times you fetch a new key and try, it will NOT work!
But fear not, there is a fix… which shows the app was written by lesser engineers for whom English and logic are optional.
*Choose “Already Installed”, INSTEAD of Setup installation anfter selecting the device you intend to add, and the alphanumeric key will be accepted and it will work. Ignore the hyphen between numbers and letters. It does not sound logical, and it’s counterintuitive, but it worked.
Now the Nest app links with the thermostat. It works!

Hi there, just checking in with you. Do you still need help?

See my post text. I was posting a solution to an unsolved problem many people had posted about, and were being given very complicated time consuming solution proposals which did not work. I could not post my 1 step solution on the o/p as the discussion was closed, hence the new post to help others.

That's great. I was just wondering if I can assist you with anything else.
