False No Usage

My gas supplier meter is showing a small amount of gas being used each day. That is correct as it is used to heat the water for a short while. Some of the use will be for a separate heating circuit not controlled by nest.

The Nest app though is now showing no use for three days. Because of the ambient temperature the main heating circuit controlled by Nest has not been used but surely Nest should show something for the water heating?

Hello PeterG-UK,

We appreciate you taking the time to let us know about your question.

Usually this no usage arose when the Nest Thermostat restarted itself improperly at some point throughout that day. Simply put, a non-orderly restart indicates that the thermostat wasn't correctly restarted after selecting Settings to restart. There may have been instances where it malfunctioned or power-related worries that it may have sparked, are there any? Please let me know if the energy history on the Nest Web App page also shows the same.

Regards,
Mark

Thank you Mark.

Both the app and the web page are showing no usage for the last week or so. No power issues. The ambient temperature is now such that no heating being used. Thinking about it some based on that, I guess Nest is only recording gas used for heating and not hot water. That made me think some more as there was one day when it looked like the towel rails on a separate circuit were turned off. It looked like we weren't going to need them any more. However we soon found we did for a while longer.

Unless you see any flaw in my logic, I think it is all explained now.

Hello @PeterG-UK! If you click on where it says "no usage" can you see it expanded or still the same?

It confirms No Usage but I now realise that is correct. Unless I am wrong, Nest only measures gas used for heating and that is not coming on. The gas being used is to heat water or for cooking.

Yes, it's true. The usage in the Energy History is related strictly for the heating. At the moment, there is no monitoring of the hot water activation and anything besides the heating, the Nest thermostat doesn't report.
